Christian Pulisic has been highly linked with a move to Chelsea for some time now, he has now signed for the London club. The highly rated 20-year-old has also been linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool. His contract with Borussia Dortmund expires in the summer of 2020 and it seems he has fallen out of favour at the club. Many news outlets had been reporting the transfer has already been agreed for the summer transfer window, but how does this transfer affect the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and other young players?
Chelsea and Youth
We all know Chelsea and youth don’t have a good history together; there’s no need to remind blues fans of the likes of De Bruyne, Salah and Lukaku who slipped through their fingers. With a new crop of young talent including the likes of Mount, Ampadu and Hudson-Odoi, they will be wary of not repeating mistakes of the past. Focusing on the U17 World Cup winner Hudson-Odoi, he has found himself in the first team squad this year featuring heavily in cup and Europa League games, but sadly used only scarcely in the league. Chelsea fans rejoice anytime he starts for the club with many tipping him for greatness. Therefore, how would the signing of Pulisic affect Hudson-Odoi?
Bringing in a young player for 50m would be a big risk considering the age of the young American, but he has shown he has the ability. However, it seems the signing would provide another obstacle to the first team for Hudson-Odoi as he is already struggling to make the matchday squad as it is. The manager will feel entitled to play the potential new signing because of the money spent on him. It is likely that Pulisic’s experience playing both for his country and domestically as well as in Europe in the Champions League shows that he is the more accomplished player so far.
Interest From Elsewhere
It is no secret that Bayern Munich are poised to test Chelsea’s resolve with an offer in excess of £20m as Hudson-Odoi has attracted a lot of attention from Germany. With the Bundesliga featuring young English talent such as Reiss Nelson, Reece Oxford and most notably, Jason Sancho. However, losing him permanently would be a huge blow especially since a buy back clause would be highly unlikely to be cheap. There’s a high possibility of a loan move to the German league which may be the best-case scenario for all involved.
For Chelsea, we know Maurizio Sarri should most likely be in the job come next season. I imagine there will be a busy transfer window as Chelsea need to strengthen in order to mount a serious challenge under their new manager. Pulisic signing would be a sign that they can be ruthless in the transfer market once again. Buying players that are of a high quality that may not even be starting games. His experiences so far bode well for his future. Despite his slow start to the season due to injuries and the fact he’s not a serial goal scorer, he would instantly embed into the Sarri style of play. Best case scenario would be a loan move for Hudson-Odoi to a high-level club and Pulisic to come in. You can never have enough good players especially since Willian and Pedro are on the wrong side of 30, these two could be Chelsea’s future.
