Why England MUST take this opportunity to do well in the 2018 World Cup

With tournament favourites Spain, Germany, Portugal and Argentina all being knocked out of the World Cup in recent days, England fans are starting to believe that this could well be the year that the Three Lions could possibly bring the famous trophy home, after some positive performances and a potential ‘easy’ route to the final being carved out due to the big guns falling short.

Gareth Southgate’s young side are all in positive spirits heading into their crunch match against Colombia in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. The Three Lions have been handed a brilliant opportunity in Russia, as other than the Swiss, it is not possible for them to face a team above them in the FIFA/Coca Cola World Rankings as Colombia are the highest ranked after England in 16th, four places below the Three Lions who find themselves 12th, with three rounds to go until to the final, you wouldn’t expect this.

Many know that World Rankings often don’t mean much, as Poland find themselves in 8th, as well as Peru in 11th who didn’t find a way out of the group stages in Russia, with Chile in at 9th who didn’t even qualify for the tournament. But we can only take this as a good sign.

Looking at Englands side on paper you would like to think that they would have the firepower to get through to the final on the 15th July, as you would consider them stronger than a Colombia side without a fully fit James Rodriguez and a Croatian side which possess a few star players. Its not just the talent that the team have, but the togetherness in the camp, as it has been widely reported how close knit this England bunch are, which has been displayed on the pitch, in the win against Panama especially.

Many feel the loss against Belgium may affect the momentum of the team, as Colombia have confidently won their last two games, with a 3-0 hammering of Poland in the process. With Spain being knocked-out by the hosts, you must believe that losing to the Belgians may have been for the best with the chances of a World Cup Final looking more and more likely. Although, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and it is certain that England will come up against top opposition in the final, if they make it. So will therefore be truly tested if they do make it.

It will take a huge effort from everyone involved to win the World Cup but it is definitely not to be ruled out, as many tipped this young, hungry England side for great things before the tournament had begun, never mind after a few of the top teams got knocked-out.

With more and more people getting behind Southgate and his plan, you must say that this atmosphere hasn’t been felt about any other England manager in a very long time. His relationship with the fans, media and most importantly the players seems to be very good which can stand the Three Lions in good stead, not just for now but for future tournaments as this young side keep improving.
