West Ham could sign Brazilian midfielder, Bernard on a free transfer following his departure from Shakhtar Donetsk, with Manuel Pelligrini keen to address the gap in his squad following news that Manuel Lanzini has obtained an injury that will keep him out of the Hammers lineup until early 2019, the Daily Star reports.
Following the expiry of the 25 year-olds contract at Shakhtar Donetsk, it is believed that West Ham have begun talks to bring the tricky midfielder to the London Stadium. If the Brazilian winger is to join the Hammers, he would become Pellegrini’s fifth summer signing since his arrival as manager, having made already notable additions with full-back Ryan Fredericks and goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański joining from Fulham and Swansea City.
Bernard is a skillful winger who has made 14 appearances for the Brazilian national team. He decided to end his stay at Shakhtar Donetsk following five years at the Ukrainian outfit where he made 96 league appearances. During his time in Ukraine, he clinched three league titles with Donetsk. The Brazilian has Champions League experience too, having played for Shakthar Donetsk in the competition on numerous occasions, last season included.
If the move is finalised, West Ham fans will hope that Bernard can bring trickery and creativity to their attack. The need for recruits in forward areas will be of utmost importance for new boss Pellegrini now. However, the news that Manchester United’s pursuit of Marko Arnautovic has ended will soften the blow of losing Lanzini for the first half of next season.
