The European Champions take on the Europa League Champions in this year’s Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul. It’s an all English final for the very first time in the competitions history. Liverpool & Chelsea’s rivalry has grown over the past few years, as the two compete for a top 4 finish in the Premier League, and clashes with these two English sides always provided heated encounters.
Pre-Season has shown us what we can expect from the Liverpool & Chelsea in the new season ahead, and with no high profile signings at Liverpool in the summer transfer window, Liverpool look to end their drought by clinching the Premier League away from Man City. And with Frank Lampard at the helm at the Bridge, a title contender and/or a top 4 finish for the blues, is a high priority. Chelsea playing 7 matches in pre-season (W:5 D:2 L:1), scoring 18 goals and conceding 11 goals, winning 5-3 & 4-3 against Salzburg & Reading respectively and ended their pre-season with a 2-2 stalemate with Borussia Monchengladbach. Liverpool on the other hand, had mix feelings in pre-season as they played 7 matches during pre-season (W:3 D:1 L:3), scoring 17 goals and conceding 11.
Liverpool kicked off the Premier League season with a comfortable win at Anfield to new comers Norwich, with a 4-1 victory, Liverpool was dominated the first half and scoring 4 goals in the process, Norwich looked at times they could have gotten a goal or two in the first half, but missed the target. Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s first game in charge did not go that well, with a 4-0 trashing by the hands of Manchester United at the Old Trafford on Sunday. Chelsea had good spells in possession in the first half, and was unlucky not to be on the score board, as they hit the bar twice, and making De Gea work in the first half, despite going down 1-0 at half time. After the half time break, all the momentum was lost and United scored 3 more goals and Chelsea suffered a bitter defeat to their title rivals.
Chelsea and Lampard need to find solutions after the defeat at Old Trafford, as they face a Liverpool side that is hungry for goals. Adrian will start in goal for Liverpool as Alisson was taking off midway through the first half of their opening fixture of the Premier League on Friday night. Lampard does not have his full squad at his disposal as, Rudiger is recovering from a knee injury, Hudson-Odoi & Loftus Cheek are both ruled out for some time with an Achilles Tendon injury and Willian is recovering from a thigh injury. The back 4 of Chelsea will have their hands full with the Liverpool front 3, but in the middle of the park is where Chelsea and Liverpool will strike blow for blow, as it’s mostly that Kante will start to provide cover for the back line. It will be interesting to see if, Sadio Mane or Origi starts on the left side for the cup final, as Origi has shown his has what it takes to be in the starting XI of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Super Cup promises to be an attacking match of football between 2 English giants, who are looking to get their hands on their first silverware for the season, as Liverpool lost 5-4 on penalties to Man City in the Community Shield just over a week ago.
