Gareth Southgate has selected his squad for England’s upcoming fixtures. The squad contains 26 players with some surprises within the squad.
Forster, Hart, Heaton;
Bertrand, Cahill, Clyne, Jones, Keane, Shaw, Smalling, Stones, Walker;
Alli, Antonio, Barkley, Dier, Lallana, Lingard, Livermore, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Redmond, Sterling, Ward-Prowse;
Defoe, Rashford and Vardy
That is all 26 players selected in the England squad.
The first surprise for me is Michail Antonio. This, to me, is a surprise as I’ve failed to be impressed so far this season, whether it’s been due to average performances or injuries. The fact Bilic tries to play him at right back is the main cause, I so far haven’t been excited by his performances for the Hammers this year.
The second surprise for me is Jesse Lingard. My reasoning behind this is I see him as a very average player. Whether the fact he plays for Manchester United plays a big part in his selection, he hasn’t seemed to turn any heads so far.
The next shock in the squad is Jake Livermore. It’s always good to see new players brought into the squad, but is he really better than the other midfielders pushing into the squad? Not in my opinion.
Next, I see Defoe as a huge shock. However, I’m very happy with this selection as I feel he has deserved this call up for the last season and this season so far. Whether I’m bias due to me being a Sunderland fan or not, you can’t deny the fact that Defoe has almost single-handedly won Sunderland more than a few games this season and played an exceptional part in their survival last year.
All in all, the squad could be better but I’m glad to see new faces and good luck to the lads in the games. COME ON ENGLAND!
