Summer Needs 2021 – Liverpool

Klopp progressively improved Liverpool every season till they won the Premier League title but their defence was spectacularly bad. The lack of defensive depth in the squad lays firmly on the managers plate, this area of the pitch still requires a new face or 2 but also the squad in general needs livening up!

Starting with the defence Neco Williams is a more than adequate squad cover for Trent and Robertson (more likely on the right side) but adding another left back with proven quality must be considered. Robertson has been lucky with injuries over the last few seasons but after what happened with VVD caution should be maintained. A promising player like Lloyd Kelly would not break the bank. The summer transfer market started well with the acquisition of Konate from Liepzig, Joe Gomez though cannot be trusted as a regular first teamer, the guy is injury prone! Matip, Phillips or Rhys Williams should never be playing for the club in big games ever again as combined units so bringing in another experienced quality centre back to challenge VVD & Konate surely is a must, Ramos is available?

Allison is the one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League but none of the guys who sit on the bench are even PL quality. Karius and Adrian are approaching the end of their contracts, Kelleher needs more experience. With both England reserve goalkeepers (Johnstone & Ramsdale) currently at EFL clubs it could be a option to bring one in on loan, Allison usually incurs 1 lengthy injury a season and would it be better for them to play all season outside the top flight or challenging for a spot in a team around the top of the division? Did not harm Dean Henderson’s stock with Gareth Southgate.

The midfield and forward line are probably the most interesting areas as the talent is stock piled but a few of them like Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita, Origi & Shaqiri are either injured a great deal or growing stale due to the lack of game time. If these men are kept they need more game time otherwise this is the time to cash in on them before their contracts run down to the final year. None of them can replace Wijnaldum so his successor needs to be found. He was signed on a free from Newcastle, this time round money will need to be spent on a high quality replacement. Locotelli has shown during Euro 2020 he is a high class player in the mould of Wijnaldum and is available. Jude Bellingham should have been bought by a domestic club last summer rather than going to Dortmund, it’s highly unlikely Liverpool would target him now as the fee would be too high, they must be kicking themselves! Salah, Mane & Firmino are all 29 now, of course they have a few more years in them at the highest level but competition and eventual starters after them need to be discovered. Jota is a start but the fact they play a 3 up top means they need a hungry 3 behind them, the Portuguese international fills one spot but as alluded to before others already at the club do not or could be leaving. Finding another frisky wide man and a more goal oriented central striker could and should be high on the agenda. Mbappe has been mentioned, his fee etc do not fit the transfer policy of Liverpool. All 3 currently occupying the starting spots came in off great seasons at lesser clubs, then becoming superstars at Anfield. The Frenchman would have made more sense coming in after his time at Monaco. Talent like Ollie Watkins, Saint-Maximin, Andre Silva, Donyell Malen or Dusan Vlahovic are more likely to be targets, their fees starting from £30m+.

Thiago struggled in his first season but if he finds the form that has won him admirers around the world before the move then he will orchestrate the midfield and the team to honours sooner rather than later. They will challenge for the title next season better than the last one, The Kop will make sure of that but it maybe a cup where the success arrives.
