Joe Allen has been rumoured to been offered to Newcastle United this summer. Following Stoke’s relegation Allen is one of a few valuable assets that the Potters have and will not see himself as a Championship player. Jurgen Klopp admitted that he wanted Allen to stay but Allen was keen for first team football. He has gained international experience with Wales and will be keen to play for a top coach like Rafa Benitez.
Do Newcastle need him?
Newcastle are craving a deeper squad and added quality if they want to push on from their top 10 position. Allen would be an upgrade on the squad options and would fight it out with Diame and Merino to play alongside Shelvey in the centre. If Rafa was to play a three in the middle it would mean Shelvey is able to move freely with the insurance of them being behind them. An important part of Rafa’s philosophy is being able to retain possession and Allen would definitely help bring that.
How much and will Ashley allow it?
With the transfer market going crazy since the Neymar transfer last year, I think the Magpies would be looking at close to £20m for him. This would be a transfer record and would need Ashley to commit to Rafa’s transfer plans. Previously Newcastle bought Gini Wijnaldam for £15m and this potential deal would smash that. This would be a sign of intent from the Ashley regime. However, history tells us that Ashley prefers cheaper signings with resale value and so this may mean he vetoes this deal.
