Southport 0-0 Fleetwood Town – Reaction!

Written by Ben Knapman

Coming into the game Fleetwood Town have been very inconsistent. We won 2-0 vs Peterborough then an edgy 0-1 away win at Chesterfield was followed up by losing 2-1 To Millwall away then winning 2-1 vs Gillingham to then lose to Bristol! Southport are 19th in the National League and also won the last 2! This game meant a lot to the Fans because we owe them pay back for the 2010/11 season where a team called Farcly Celtic had 6 points taken off us and Southport had 3 because they won 1 and lost 1 against them.

The game was kicked off and it was a freezing cold night so I was just hoping for a good performance! We had just signed a Right back/Centre Half from Barcelona B team called Goodswill Ekpolo and he looked decent! Early on Southport looked a lot more up for it then we did. They had a couple of chances but hit them way wide and over. Our best attempt in the first half was for Bobby Grant who hit it way wide of the post.

In my opinion the game was quite dull for the first half. In the 2nd half Fleetwood introduced Matty Woolfred and he was poor every time he got the ball gave it away and his best chance was from a scramble after Jimmy Ryan hit a wonderful free kick saved on to the bar from the Southport keeper and Woolfred hit it over. Then Southport were starting to tire. However they had a long range effort Parried by Chris Neal in the Fleetwood goal. Then Southport fans behind the goal set off smoke bombs and a massive flair onto the pitch and the game was delayed by five minutes. Then Fleetwood had a variety of chances through a Davante Cole 1 on 1 where he had a chance to get all the Fleetwood fans on side and make him a hero by beating our arch Enemies!

Cian Bolger had a header in the last minute of the game where he headed it just wide! So the game ended 0-0, it was a poor performance in the end only and only a few stood out for me! Jimmy Ryan our central midfielder who always carries the midfield, Amari bell our left back who is coming on leaps and bounds! And Goodswill Ekpolo. All the rest were very poor. Looking into the replay I think we can get a result against them at Highbury. Hopefully it will be full of entertainment and hopefully a Fleetwood win! I would say 2-0 Fleetwood then Shrewsbury away would await in the 2nd round!
