Joe Piggot returned to Roots Hall to haunt his ex-team as Southend United dropped closer to the relegation zone.
A calamitous defensive error in the second half involving Mark Oxley and Michael Turner gifted Piggot a golden opportunity to give his side a further step towards survival.
The striker, who scored Southend United’s dramatic equalizer in the 2015 League two play-off final, slotted away his 13th goal of the season to claw Wimbledon off of the bottom of the table.
The uneventful first half was controlled by the home side, with chances coming from Wordsworth’s freekick and Turner’s looping header from a deep corner.
In the 67th minute, a miscalculation involving Turner and Oxley with a loose ball allowed the Don’s striker to fulfill their joint embarrassment. The striker refused to celebrate against his former side, despite the jubilation of the fans and teammates.
Southend United now sit in 20th position, only above the relegation zone on goal difference. AFC Wimbledon reduced the gap between the sides to three points. The end of the season run-in looks worrying for the Blues.
