According to Sports Mole, Mark Hughes’s Southampton are reportedly interested in bringing Italy and Atalanta forward, Andrea Petagna to the south coast as ex-Stoke boss Hughes remains keen to add to his attacking options having steered the Saints away from relegation last season.
Hughes has identified the 22-year-old Italian as a top target ahead of his first full season in charge at Southampton. However, the Saints are set to face competition for Petagna’s signature, with Premier League newcomers, Wolverhampton Wanderers looking to steal a deal for the Atalanta man.
Petagna netted six times in 39 appearances last season and also made his international debut having represented Italy throughout his youth. The Italian is said to be available for around £10.7 million.
The ex-AC Milan academy product has enjoyed a handful of loan moves across Italy at Ascoli, Vicenza, and Sampdoria prior to signing for Atalanta in 2016, where he has clocked up 63 appearances and nine goals over two years.
Petagna may be unproven in England, however, the Saints have struggled to find the net despite having five strikers on the books, with Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini two of the names unable to rediscover their finest form.
Meanwhile, the Saints are also said to be battling it out with West Ham United to secure the services of Barcelona defender, Marlon Santos, with the Hammers reportedly having a £13 million bid knocked back by the Spanish giants.
