The pressure has mounted on Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane after a disastrous campaign. Despite last seasons heroics, this below par season has lead to pundits to call for his dismissal.
Real Madrid currently sit in 4th place in La Liga, a whopping 19 points behind leaders Barcelona. They are out of the Copa del Rey and face a difficult tie in the Champions League against an in-form PSG side. Nowhere near good enough for the world’s biggest club.
Zidane’s main problem has been getting the best out of his key players. Cristiano Ronaldo, in particular hasn’t been effective, only registering 8 goals all season (the team’s top goal scorer), which is a million miles from his usual standards. Only Gareth Bale has scored over 5 goals, with the team suffering from the injury to prolific striker Karim Benzema.
The consistent underperforming of the players, begs the question whether Zidane may have lost the dressing room? A Champions League triumph may be the only way Zidane keeps his job because of the ruthlessness of owner Florentino Perez’s quickfire nature.
In my opinion, I wouldn’t sack Zidane this season, especially after his heroic double last year. However, as a football purist and believe managers should be given time to turn things around when under pressure. Although, Real Madrid is a huge global franchise and things need to change fast, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Zidane goes between now and the end of the season.
