The next World Cup is to be played from 21st Nov -18th Dec and currently the Premier League have not decided what it’s going to do as a result yet. The Championship will take some sort of break and the other 2 EFL divisions will carry on as normal. Russia 2018, 108 Premier League and 23 Championship players took part. It’s fair to say from the 12th of November till 26th Dec 2022 a large chunk of footballers will be left with no action and the English football organisers will still want to make money. Fans can feast on the winter carnival of action but we are built to enjoy the biggest tournament in the world during summer months, Nov & Dec is when we go out watching OUR teams. What can be produced to quench our needs?
Back in the 80’s the Guinness Soccer 6 tournament was amazing to watch, with top flight sides fielding strong line ups, this could occur again in 2022. Star power will be affected but with 44 teams from the top 2 divisions taking part in a week long tournament, Sky or BT Sport would be lapping up the coverage while terrestrial TV take all the Qatar action. The League Cup should be scrapped full stop and if it still exists in 2022 surely it would not be played due to the World Cup therefore this tournament is viable alternative. By letting all league clubs take part their could be regional heats then finals, saving players earlier in the season or a opportunity to fit in league games when Cup games would be played.
Premier League County Championship/Sheffield Shield Style Tournament
Another opportunity for TV rights to be sold, which of course would make many involved at high level management salivating. For players selected it would also keep them sharp being involved in something slightly more competitive than friendlies. Fans are creatures of nature and surely being able to go out and watch a game on a Saturday is better than watching South Korea v Bosnia? How much fun would it be watching a London select side versus Manchester Select? At least West Ham fans may see some of their players win a game!
While the Premier League takes all the money many clubs outside the top division are struggling or stretching themselves into a Bury size oblivion! For fans who go to games the Qatar World Cup will be a month long version of Non League Day if they so wish and watch other local sides. Therefore wouldn’t it be cool if the clubs not playing loan out their players to the bottom tier sides even for a couple of games. It would need a relaxation of the transfer rules during the period which is easily done. Injuries could occur but that’s the case whenever a player trains or plays in a match, ask Loftus Cheek how he feels about pointless matches?
The worry is the players not taking part will have a month off bar a few friendly matches, maybe behind closed doors or intense training sessions. Us the fans lose out twice with no summer World Cup or chance to watch our beloved team leading up to Christmas. With the idea of a few more days off who knows players agents may source extra circular activity via the bonkers celebrity world? Coupled with ex pro’s taking advantage of the football crazy period, who’s to say TV networks may commission more football related content linked to the top rated shows, therefore look out for the following:
Academy Footballers Love Island
Don’t Pay Take It Away with Vinny Jones & Roy Keane
Danny Dyers The Wall with Jamie Vardy & Wayne Rooney
PL Countdown with James Milner & Jordan Henderson
Top Gear with Etiene Capoue
Judge Rinder with John Terry & Wayne Bridge
Undateables featuring Paul Pogba & Jesse Lingard
Casualty featuring the acting debuts of Andy Carroll, Phil Jones & Kieran Tierney
Even the return of the iconic Superstars so many awesome athletic footballers could take park like Adama Traore, David Luiz, Mesut Ozil, Joelinton, Joe Hart & Glen Murray.
One thing is for sure, Qatar 2022 is going to be a disaster!
