The Premier League has barely started (4 games so far) and some would say not much has been learnt but I disagree!
At the start i ranked the teams into 4 groups:
GOING FOR GOLD (Title chance)
BOYS ON TOUR (Trying to qualify for Europe either Champions League or Europa)
SPICE GIRLS (Wannabes)
BELOW THE BELT (Potential relegation fodder)
After these first few games its shown that maybe in the end Spurs will finish 3rd but they are way off seriously challenging for the league. The new White Hart Lane needs to become a fortress. They have now slipped into the Boys on Tour group, that said quite a few teams have joined that section including Everton, Leicester & West Ham. Due to the rebuilding at Man Utd and Arsenal they are prime to be challenged by the big spending Toffees, youthful guile of the Foxes or Haller Led Hammers. I fully expect all 3 of those teams to take points off any of the so called Big 6 this season.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will be fun to watch due to the young talent being given a chance but with the Champions League distraction they could end up as low as 10th. They will be joined in the Spice Girls section by Palace with Watford dropping out. Selhurst Park is a tough place to go and after the Utd win they showed that with the pace they possess a few away wins will be achieved. Any team with Zaha in it will have a chance, without a shadow of a doubt this will be his last season donning the red & blue of the Eagles.
Watford have joined Below the Belt with a such a thump they will most certainly be relegated. Quite a bold call with so much of the season to go but their key players from previous years becoming a hindrance eg Doucoure, Holebas & Deulofeu they’ve been embarrassing! Were they that good or have they referred back to their normal level?
One of the promoted sides is going to benefit from Watford being so bad, it’s probably not going to be Norwich but they will be enjoyable to watch. Quickly they need to learn to defend better or this will be a one season return as good as Pukki has started I cannot see him scoring 30+ goals or someone else assisting him with enough goals to outscore their leaky, error riddled defence.
The big question therefore is left can any other side be worse than Sheff Utd or Aston Villa? As we speak I say maybe Brighton, Wolves or Newcastle could be but that is a big shout. Villa & Sheff Utd have stock piled their squads to deal with the workload but no real quality was added to them bar Heaton to Villa. Would any of the top 10 sides take any of their players? Maybe McGinn or Grealish from Villa but certainly not any others but their form this season will determine their next destination.
Clubs like Southampton and Burnley are lucky so many clubs are worse than them as they seem to be hanging on to the top flight by skin of their teeth. The players they sign show a real lack of forward planning, at least Bournemouth invest in youth, they seem to have a plan.
By the time the next international break comes along the mini leagues I’ve mentioned will have certainly taken a firm formation and at least one manager will have lost his job………
