Portugal were frustrated in their opening match of Euro 2016, drawing 1-1 with Iceland having taken the lead through a Nani goal. Fernando Santos’s men conceded in the second half and failed to make a good impression against a nation that has a population of around 330,000 people. I give my player ratings for the Portugal side.
Rui Patricio – 6/10
The Portuguese Goalkeeper had little to do but didn’t put a foot wrong when called upon. Helpless for the goal.
Vieirinha – 5/10
Hit a lovely left footed shot in the first half showing his intentions but a bright first half was cancelled out by a poor second half where the right back was majorly at fault for the Iceland equaliser. He looked less comfortable on the ball as the game went on despite a positive start, making frequent mistakes handing Iceland possession.
Pepe – 4.5/10
A key man at the heart of the defence, the Real Madrid centre half was a liability giving away sloppy passes, caught of position and looking uncertain more often than not. The 33 year old was caught out for the Iceland goal and only made limited interceptions and headers during the game. Has to step it up.
Ricardo Carvalho – 6/10
Certainly a composed figure as you would suspect, the former Chelsea man had a mixed game cutting out attacks at times but misplacing passes.
Raphael Guerreiro – 6/10
Had a solid outing despite an uncomfortable start to the game. The left back provided a solid base in the Portugal defence but was limited going forwards.
Danilo Pereira – 6/10
Little involvement in the game, the Porto defensive midfielder kept it simple and offered a shield to the back four but a limited performance without adding something extra to the side.
Andre Gomes – 6/10
A tale of two halves, the 22 year old looked influential in the first half notably getting an assist. Gomes looked very tidy on the ball but his game halted in the second period where he made a number of slack passes making it difficult for Portugal to impose themselves on the game.
Joao Moutinho – 7/10
Moutinho had a good game without causing real damage to the Iceland defence. He consistently kept the ball well and linked play throughout. He can be content with his performance, a shame for him that his team mates couldn’t reach the levels required.
Nani – 6/10
Missed a sitter with a header saved by the Goalkeeper from just a few yards out but later in the first half bagged the opener with another simple finish. He caused a few problems but really he gave the ball away too frequently.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 6/10
Some nice touches as you’d expect and a great cross provided to Nani in the first half but the main man didn’t perform as well as he is needed to. He gave the ball away cheaply and failed to drive at the Iceland defence. He missed a golden chance late on where he should have won the game with a header.
