As we pass the 10 game mark into the Premier League season, it’s a perfect landmark to assess how each of the 20 clubs have fared so far. With money spent and expectations all part of the decision making process, I weigh up how each side has got on so far this campaign.
Manchester City – 1st – Grade: A+
Guardiola’s side look unstoppable at the moment, having dropped just 2 points all season they finally look they are clicking and are demolishing everyone in their sight. Of course we know they have done this in the past and slipped up so conclusions can’t be made at this stage but impressive wins over the likes of Chelsea have put the club 5 points clear at the top of the table. All of their attacking talents have chipped in and they’re doing the business in style.
Manchester United – 2nd – Grade: A-
5 points behind their fiercest rivals, there is still room for improvement for United. The problem for me was Mourinho set out to stop a vulnerable Liverpool beating them at Anfield, that was perfectly fine should they have beaten Huddersfield the week after, they didn’t and now that type of approach has cost them up to this stage in terms of going toe to toe with City. Overall they’ve looked a far better unit, Matic and Lukaku are making them a force as they continue to improve, they’ve scored plenty of goals when they’ve needed to but have that all important balance to keep it tight when it matters.
Newcastle United – 9th – Grade: A+
For me probably the worst squad in the league, so what a fantastic start to the season for Newcastle it has been. There’s plenty to be positive about after a very negative off season, they’re keeping it tight in games and up to now have nicked the 3 points propelling them into the top half. Benitez has got them playing to their best ability and they are making the key moments in games count. They haven’t lost at home since the opening day of the season so all is good for the Toon Army. I don’t think you could ask for much more.
Southampton – 10th – Grade: C
Saints still seem to be far from their best. They’ve got a promising group but they are not as inspiring as they should be. From a results point of view they’ve done okay with a real mixed bag. They can certainly get more out of certain players, Fraser Forster looks a disaster waiting to happen in goal while Gabbiadini’s hot streak seems like a long time ago. They need to raise their game I think because they aren’t fulfilling their ability but they’re in a decent position so far.
Stoke City – 14th – Grade: C
A few positive results for Stoke this season including wins over Arsenal and Watford but there’s no real inspiration coming from the club. Mark Hughes always seems to be linked with the sack and you struggle to get excited by what they’re doing. They’ve made strides defensively with their new signings it seems even though a 7-2 loss to Manchester City would suggest otherwise. Probably what you’d expect from Stoke so far though.
