Messi’s Era

Written by Karine Grigoryan

Writing a book about Messi is and always will be hard. What am I talking about? Even writing an article about him is hard. But I am going to risk and do it. This is not a biography where you’ll see the date of his birth or stats of his career or how he started his legacy. Those things u can find out just by reading Wikipedia or watching a movie called “Messi”. My book is about my point of view  of who the legendary Messi is and why I love him the most. To start this I want to share one of my favourite quotes said by Leo:”I prefer to win titles with the team ahead of individual awards or scoring more goals than anyone else. I’m more worried about being a good person than being the best football player in the world. When all of this is over, what are you left with? When I retire, I hope I am remembered for being a decent guy.”

There was a time that I didn’t like Messi. I mean I didn’t even know who Messi was. I only knew his name and that he plays for Barca. I found out the real Messi when I watched his movie. From the movie I found out a lot about him. A lot of people watch him but don’t really understand his greatness. His greatness lies in the fact that he doesn’t admit that he is the greatest footballer of all time. You will never see him saying that. He gets shy when he reads comments like “Leo Messi is an Alien” or “Leo Messi is the greatest”. And that’s what makes him the greatest. Nothing, not stats, not awards, nothing can prove his greatness. He is bigger than every single award that exists in this world. What am I saying? He is bigger than football itself.

“We call people talented because they do something that no one can do or they can do but they haven’t tried and we call people geniuses because they do something that no one has tried to do.”

Yes, Lionel Andres Messi is genius. He does unbelievable things on the pitch. When he enters it, it feels like he is at home, somewhere he can be himself. And that’s it. He and the ball.

Once Ray Hudson said: ”As long as the ball is in Messi’s feet, he will do his magic”

As long as Messi has the ball no one can stop him.

I don’t understand those football fans who don’t like Messi. I mean how can you not love him? And how after this you call yourself a football fan? Yes a lot of you can disagree but denying that he is the greatest? You can’t. I have not seen all of those football legends, I have not even seen Messi when he was young, but even without this I can proudly say that Leo Messi is something else. There was a time when I watched Barca games only if Neymar was playing, but everything has changed since I watched that movie. When he plays it feels like you are watching a fantasy film with him as the main role. He is the magician and the ball is his magic stick.

The fact that he never admits that he is the greatest makes him the greatest. I have already mentioned this, but wanted to say it again. It will never tire me to say it all over again. And this is the part I love about him the most. Messi is something else. You just can’t be this humble, this kind, this perfect. You just can’t. ”Money is not a motivating factor. Money doesn’t thrill me or make me play better because there are benefits to being wealthy. I’m just happy with a ball at my feet. My motivation comes from playing the game I love. If I wasn’t paid to be a professional footballer I would willingly play for nothing.”  And this are the words of a player who has won everything possible but yet has years to play, to give unforgettable moments to the football world. You will think that it’s a joke, how can someone not care about money. Well, Messi does not even care about individual awards such as the well known Ballon d’Or. For Messi team is above all. He is a team player. He would give his 5 BdOs just to have 1 WC trophy.

Nowadays a lot of people say that Argentina national team and Barca depend on Messi. But if you ask him he will say the opposite. He will deny it. For me Messi is the best but Barca do not depend on him because Barca is Messi and Messi is Barca.

So that’s it the thing about Messi I love the most that no matter what he is still humble. No matter how great he is he never forgets who he was. He never forgets who made him like this.

Everything about Leo seems special. First thing that I noticed about him was his goal celebration. I first thought that he is thanking God by pointing to the sky, but then I found out that he always dedicates his goal to his grandmother, who, in fact, was the first one to believe that Messi is going to be the best. The second thing I noticed is that no matter who scored the goal, there will always be heard “Messi,Messi” chants all over Camp Nou. Those chants are magical. Just like he is.

Messi’s goals are always important but his assist and tricky things are also important, those make the game more interesting. I mean who could think to assist when you are taking a penalty? I know that was not created by Leo but he was the only one who did it for our generation. Have you ever seen someone taking free kicks as you are about to take a penalty? No? Well, Messi does it. He does it always kinda the same way but no goalkeeper guesses and never saves. I told ya he is a magician, creator, designer of the modern football with new tricky, cool things. He not only gets praised for goals and stuff but also the way he sees the field, the way he x-rays it and the way he passes the ball and when he loses it he gets it back in a second. I have never seen before someone nutmeg a goalkeeper, I have never seen someone trick 4 defenders and score a goal until I saw Leo play.
Although we are living in Messi’s era we’ve got to admit that he is the most underrated player nowadays and I think even in history. Being who he is, he is still underrated. Seeing how people compare him to others, seeing how some bring up stupid stats about him and trying to put his name down proves it all. Sometimes they say “We don’t deserve Messi”. Yes, we don’t actually.

We will never see anyone like Messi ever again, but when he retires, his legacy will continue forever. And maybe then people will remember his name and those who loved him and appreciated him will smile whenever they hear his name. I will always feel proud to call myself his fan and I will always be ready to fight for his name. The name that will forever stay in football’s history. The greatest name.

June 24, 1987, Rosario, Argentina. Was born a guy named Lionel Andres Messi. Was born a legend.

The end.
