Teamtalk are reporting that Gelson Martins has reportedly terminated his own contract to force a move away from Sporting Lisbon this summer. This news will come as a boost for Arsenal and Liverpool who are both interested in the player.
Arsenal have been tracking the player since the arrival of Sven Mislintat as the clubs director of football and Unai Emery has given the green light for the club to pursue the transfer. It is rumoured that Arsenal have already have already gone in with a €30 million bid last week but saw it rejected by Lisbon as they are holding out for €60 million to activate the players release clause. Liverpool have also been linked to the player but have so far not been in contact with Sporting.
Martins seem’s that keen to make the move to the Premier League he has decided that if the club won’t let it happen he will force it through.
A Portuguese newspaper called Record is reporting that William Carvalho who has been linked with Leicester in the past along with Bruno Fernandes and Martins have all written to the club submitting letters of resignation, they have also written to the Football Federation of Portugal to explain why they have taken this action. If the club accepts the resignations of the players then it is possible that they could leave on free transfers.
Sporting lost the Euorpa League Final to Atletico Madrid last month and a number of their players were attacked by masked individuals at the training ground while the President of the club had threatened to suspend some of the players after the failure to beat Atletico and miss out on Champions League football for next season.
Martins made 52 appearances last season scoring 13 goals and chipping in with 13 assists.
