Leeds United’s Pre-Season Review

Written by Evan Chattaway

Here I look at Leeds United’s Pre-Season so far and how we can expect the 2016/17 season to pan out.

1. Garry Monk

Leeds announced after parting company with Steve Evans that former Swansea City manager Gary Monk would be taking over at Elland Road. After a great first season with Swansea guiding them to the Europa league, Gary lost the confidence of the players after a couple of seasons and was sacked by Swansea.

Monks short Premier league and Europa league experience is sure to excite Whites fans.

Leeds for sure had a busy start to the transfer market. Some for good reasons and some bad, the sale of Lewis Cook, the starlet in the United team surely left a disappointing feeling around Elland Road with Bournemouth snapping the young star up for a fee rising to £15 million.

Leeds have made some impressive signings and have splashed the cash on two attackers. Marcus Antonsson arrived from Sweden for a fee of around £2 million after scoring 10 goals in 12 games for his former club and was currently leading the league in goals.

Next we turn to Kemar Roofe, the shining light for Oxford United and the main reason for their promotion to League One, after having a joint Goals and Assists tally of 37 (26 goals) Roofe joined up with the whites for a fee of £3 million and big things are expected of him at Elland Road.

Leeds also secured the signings of Veteran Goalkeeper Robert Green, young Swansea midfielder Matt Grimes (Loan), Kyle Bartley(Loan) and highly rated Sporting Lisbon loanee Hadi Sacko.

3. Pre-Season Matches

V Shelbourne (W – 2-1)

Leeds started of their preseason with a win after Doukara and new signing Sacko fired them to a win, this was a good chance for Monk to try out different players.

V Shamrock Rovers (W – 3-0)

Shamrock proved to be no test for Leeds as they cruised to a victory with new signing Antonsson grabbing a brace and Chris Wood scoring a penalty.

V Guiseley (W – 4-3)

with two matches in the space of 24 hours Monk had to be careful what squad he picked for this game, Monk decided to field a young team with a couple of experienced players to balance it out.
Leeds found themselves 3-0 down in the first half an hour to non league Guiseley which was a shock to the team, the second half proved different with Doukara, Phillips, Botaka and youngster Eoghan Stokes completing a fantastic turnaround to make Leeds United preseason record 3 wins from 3.

V Peterbrough (L 2-1)

Leeds turned their attention to League One side Peterbrough. Alex Mowatt opened the scoring to put Leeds united ahead, Posh struggled to cope with Leeds in the first half but managed to keep the score at 1-0.

The second half proved different with Posh attacker Coulthirst netting two fantastic goals in a half where it saw Leeds United’s pre-season tiredness kick in.

Leeds united fans have alot to be optimistic about this season with more signings to come I predict an 8th place finish for the Yorkshire team.
