According to the Liverpool FC website, the Reds are ready to fight off competition to sign 22-year-old centre back Caglar Soyuncu.

With Liverpool’s formidable front three turning attention away from the backline, much of Liverpool’s success this season was down to Virgil Van Dijk’s transfer in January.

Now, the Merseyside club are looking at Turkish defender Soyuncu as Van Dijk’s possible long-term partner.

Soyuncu has attracted attention from various big European clubs like rivals Manchester United and Arsenal.

But the Reds are ready to fight off competition for the young Freiburg defender.

The centre-back has been selected for the World Cup in Russia and is currently away in preparation ahead of the tournament this summer. But when speaking to the Turkish media, he confirmed he wouldn’t be dealing with his future until he’s back in Germany.

Liverpool were reportedly watching the defender in Turkey’s most recent warm-up match against World Cup hosts Russia. The two teams played out a 1-1 draw but Soyuncu was at fault for Russia’s goal, giving away possession in an unforgivable position outside the area.

The Turkish defender made 25 appearences for Freiburg in a season where his club narrowly escaped relegation. Freiburg finished one place and three points off the relegation zone and with interest from big European giants, it will be hard for Soyuncu not to be attracted away.

Defensively, Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled at the beginning of the season and just like most positions in the squad, Liverpool lack good quality with variety at the back.

With Champions League football again next season and a potential title challenge, Klopp will need to reinforce his Liverpool squad well and Soyuncu could be a good option for the German manager.
