Premier League Champions Liverpool confirm the signing of Ben Davies from Preston for £1.6m on a long-term contract.
As part of this deal, Liverpool will send centre back Sepp Van den Berg to the Championship side on loan for the rest of the season.
Celtic thought they had signed the player on a pre-contract agreement who had 6 months remaining on his contract until Liverpool stepped in. Burnley, Bournmeouth and Sheffield United were also interested but the 25-year-old only had eyes for Anfield.
Ben Davies has made over 250 appearances from the fifth tier to the second-tier and now will get a chance in the Premier League to showcase his talent. He offers Jurgen Klopp many options at the back. He’s capable in 1 to 1 situation. He reads the game well and rarely beaten for pace. With Liverpool having defensive issues, the centre back was rarely injured for Preston.
The time of the deal only happened because of the injury to Joel Matip who suffered an ankle ligament damage during the win against Tottenham and is likely to be back fit for the next few months.
He joined long-term absentees, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are both expected to miss the remainder of the season, whilst midfielder Fabinho who has been slotting in at the back is also sidelined but could make a return against Man City next weekend.
I think it’s a good deal for the Reds who are not paying an enormous fee for a defender. He is someone with experience in the Championship, having played a lot of games. Jurgen Klopp has worked with players like this before who have come up in the lower ranks and Ben Davies will want to show what he's capable of.
Liverpool also have completed the signing of Schalke defender Ozan Kabak on a six-month loan with an option to buy in the summer.
Shkodran Mustafi terminated his contract with Arsenal to join the Bundesliga side enabling the Champions to push through their move for the 20-year-old.
Reports suggest Newcastle United had agreed a deal with the Turkish defender before Liverpool nipped in to sign the defender from Schalke.
Ozan Kabak has already played 57 times in the Bundesliga and 14 in the Turkish Super Lig. He has champions league and international experience at such a young age and has been described as strong, quick and is a real leader on the pitch. He has scored five out of his six career goal from set pieces, something Liverpool have been lacking this season. During his Schalke career he's won 70% of his aerial duels and 63% defensive duels. He's capable of playing both the right and left sided centre-back.
The 20-year-old have linked with Liverpool for a long time. He is leaving the German side who remain bottom of the league with the worst defensive record, so there is mmense pressure on him to show what he is capable of. I think with his experience he can improve Liverpool's defensive problems massively. He has had some impressive performances in the late and will hope to help the Reds retain their title.
Other defenders that have been linked with a move to Liverpool today were Carmo from Barga and Duje Caleta Car from Marseille but both bids were rejected.
