Liverpool were dealt a difficult start to the season facing tough opponents such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and current champions, Leicester in their opening 6 games. But still a great start for the reds beating Arsenal 4-3 on the opening day of the season. They went on to lose their second game to newly promoted side, Burnley 2-0. Jurgen Klopp’s side have since gone on an unbeaten run, including a 2-1 win over Chelsea, a 5-1 demolition of Hull and rolling the league champions, Leicester, 4-1.
It’s still to early to say where Liverpool will finish but I’m going to go ahead and say they will finish in the top 3. A bold statement, yes, but I now fully believe that the Merseyside club are almost back to full strength. Currently sitting joint 3rd with Arsenal is a brilliant achievement considering the rough fixtures they were given. Though I still think Liverpool desperately need to work on defending to stop conceding silly goals such as the goal they let in against Chelsea. I’m still undecided on the best partnership of centre backs, part of me wants to say Matip and Lovren but part of me wants to say Matip and Klaven. Either way I believe Joel Matip is a phenomenal signing especially on a free transfer. He is looking good at the back and I for one am very impressed.
Attacking has been very good and they are not short of goal threats in their squad. New comers Sadio Manè and Georginio Wijnaldum are great additions to the attacking line, Manè is already off to a flying start under Klopp scoring 3 goals. Also Adam Lallana who featured in my Team of the Week is going from strength to strength this season, and if he carries on he could be a key figure for Liverpool.
Captain Jordan Henderson is also in brilliant form, I’ll admit, i really doubted him last season and in the Euro’s but at the moment he’s proving me wrong. I’m overly happy with his performances, especially with the goal against Chelsea (belter) which genuinely got me out of my seat with excitement, I don’t think I’ve been that excited about a goal since THAT Zidane volley in the Champions league! But anyway, going back to Henderson, he’s becoming quite the leader of Liverpool.
With goals flying in by huge amounts in recent games and getting deserved wins I really think Liverpool are in the running for top 3. What do you think? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
