Leicester City’s Top 5 January Transfers

As we enter the January transfer window, Leicester may be looking into the market to see how their squad can be improved to help maintain second spot in the Premier League. The Foxes have signed many key players in the winter period over the years and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to try and replicate one of these signings this season. Here are Leicester’s Top 5 January Transfers:

5) Matty Fryatt

In January 2006, Matty Fryatt joined the Foxes from Walsall for a fee of around £135,000. The striker went on to make 168 appearances and scored 51 goals.

Fryatt became a fan favourite after scoring many key goals throughout his time at the club. He was Leicester’s top goalscorer in the 2008/09 season as well as the 2009/10 season, proving how much of an impact he had for the Foxes.

Although despite his success, Fryatt had some of his high reputation tarnished, when he left to join Hull in 2010. This came after Leicester failed to gain promotion to the Premier League after losing to Cardiff in the play off semi-final.

4) Danny Drinkwater

Joining from Manchester United for only £810,000 in January 2012, Danny Drinkwater turned out to be one of Leicester best signings.

The centre midfielder made 193 appearances for the Foxes and scored 13 goals. After a couple of years in the Championship, The Foxes were promoted in 2014 and Drinkwater was named as part of the Team of the Year as well as being nominated for Championship Player of the Year.

The Englishman was a mainstay in Leicester’s title winning side, forming an unstoppable partnership with N’Golo Kante and because of his performances he was called up to the England squad. He made his senior international debut at Wembley against Holland and was named man of the match.

3) Wilfred Ndidi

Wilfred Ndidi joined Leicester in January 2017 from Belgian side Genk. Since joining, Ndidi has made 108 appearances and has built a reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, making his £14m price tag seem like an absolute bargain.

The Nigerian has been the first name on the team sheet over the last three seasons for the Foxes and has became a key player for all managers he has played under so far. This trend has carried on since Brendan Rodgers was appointed and the 23-year-old midfielder is considered to be one of the best tacklers in Europe. Many fans also believe that he is one of the best signings Leicester have made over recent years.

2) Wes Morgan

In close second comes Wes Morgan. Since being signed from Nottingham Forest for £1m in January 2012, Morgan has made 266 appearances for Leicester and has been club captain for seven years. The Jamaican centre back has been a constant in the Foxes back line since he joined and is considered a club legend by fans.

During his time at the club, Morgan has lifted two league trophies. He lead Nigel Pearson’s Leicester side to the Championship title in 2014 and he also got to make his stamp in history when lifting the Premier League title with Claudio Ranieri in 2016.

Under Brendan Rodgers, Morgan still remains in the squad with the manager stating the importance of having the club captain around. After his impact over the years, he is respected very highly by all players and staff around the club.

1) Riyad Mahrez

The transfer of Riyad Mahrez to Leicester is highly regarded as one of the biggest bargains of all time, joining from French second division side Le Havre for just £450,000. The Algerian went on to make 158 appearances for the Foxes and scored 42 goals as well as 33 assists.

During his time at Leicester he won the Premier League title and was one of the key players throughout the miracle season. In that same year he was named in the Premier League Team of the Year and became the first ever African to win the PFA Player of the Year award. As well as this he was also nominated for the Ballon D’Or alongside his teammate Jamie Vardy and he was named BBC African Footballer of the Year.

The amount of accolades he has won, his impact in the title winning season and the price of his move all combine to prove why Mahrez is the best January transfer that Leicester have made so far.
