Deadline Day is always full of drama, with so many rumours and so many deals flying around it can be a lot to get your head around. It is a standout day for fans across the globe as they live in hope for that final transfer that can make all the difference or equally as important, keeping hold of that star man. There will be so many bits of business happening today but we at All Out Football will be looking at the main transfer activity and give our verdict on whether clubs are making the right moves.

Orestis Karnezis – Udinese to Watford – Season long loan

Watford have made a late addition to test Heurelho Gomes’s steel as they bring in Greek international Karnezis who is more than familiar with the Pozzo network. Having spent a season at Granada, the 32 year old has also been at Udinese for the last three years and now makes the switch to the other Pozzo owned club, in Hertfordshire. Having been first choice in Italy it raises questions how the setup will be under Marco Silva with neither ‘keeper likely to settle for being placed on the bench.

Knowing very little about Karnezis I will not try and suggest what the goalkeeper will offer however I think having developed a good reputation at Watford’s partner club this is a sensible and effective move by the club. Gomes who I fear could be on the decline having suffered from a few mistakes last season while not covering himself in any glory against Liverpool on the opening day would suggest that this could well be a weakness in the Watford squad. And while the Brazillian is a hugely popular figure where I personally am desperate for him to succeed, I think it could benefit Gomes to have some genuine competition potentially lifting the standards of this all important department. We have also seen Gomes pick up injuries during matches and this now gives more confidence going into games knowing that we have upgraded our alternative goalkeeper. While equally we don’t know what to expect from Karnezis, it stills breeds confidence that Gomes can step up to the plate as he has silenced doubters more often than not since his arrival to Vicarage Road.

It now looks set for Pantilimon to leave with West Brom linked in a £3 million move. If this deal is to go through then once again I think this is smart business from the owners and any doubts over Gomes as our number one now have a logical and reassuring contingency in place.
