Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic is a wanted man, as Jose Mourinho hopes to land his No 1 transfer target and bring the Croatian to Old Trafford for £65 million, as reported by Teamtalk.
The 24-year-old midfielder has found it hard for game time at the Bernabéu since his arrival in 2015.
The former Dynamo Zagreb academy graduate was one of the most promising youngsters across Europe after two successful seasons in the Serie A with Inter Milan which saw him make the move to Madrid.
The Croatian International made 21 appearances in La Liga last term, with 11 of those coming from the bench. The classy midfielder made one assist while boasting a pass completion rate of 94%.
He signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 for around €29 million.
Kovacic is currently at the World Cup with Croatia after his side topped Group D winning all three games against Iceland, Nigeria and Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
The midfielder has never been able to break into the Real Madrid team, with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos obtaining the centre-midfield spots, with Casemiro the preferred choice as the defensive midfielder.
Kovacic has been part of Real Madrid’s Champions League winning side for the last three seasons.
Jose Mourinho evidently wants to strengthen his midfield as he has already acquired the services of Brazilian International Fred who recently signed a deal at Old Trafford after a €59 million transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.
