Hull City 2016 Playoff Winning Team: Where Are They Now?

Written by Lenny Silvester

Just under 2 years ago, Hull City won a playoff final at Wembley to gain promotion to the Premier League – yes you read that correctly! Now as City are 21st in the Championship, we take a look at where the 14 players who where involved are now respectively.

GK – Eldin Jakupovic.

In his first season at the club when he dropped the ball into his own net against Sheffield Wednesday, I can’t imagine that Jakupovic would have thought that over three years later he would keep a clean sheet to help City beat Wednesday to get back into the Premier League. The Swiss keeper would have one more season at City and be a key player in the 2016/2017 Premier League season. But that was his last of his six seasons and he left to join Leicester following the clubs relegation in 2017 where he has made two first team appearances for Leicester in 6 months.

RB – Moses Odubajo.

Such a promising player, Moses Odubajo was looking forward to his first Premier League season following winning the playoffs, only for him to suffer a long term knee injury against Grimsby the following pre-season. Odubajo has not made an appearance for City since and has faced 18 months out. He’s hoping to return into the squad in the coming weeks and help the club avoid relegation to league one.

CB – Michael Dawson.

THE MAN WHO LIFTED THE TROPHY AND ONE OF FEW PLAYERS STILL AT THE CLUB, MICHAEL DAWSON COULD HAVE BEEN ON THE SCORESHEET AT WEMBLEY ONLY TO BE DENIED BY THE BRILLIANT KIEREN WESTWOOD FROM CLOSE RANGE. THE RELIABLE SKIPPER IS NOW IN HIS FOURTH SEASON AT THE CLUB AND COULD BE FACING BACK TO BACK RELEGATION FROM THE PREMIER LEAGUE TO LEAGUE ONE.

CB – CURTIS DAVIES.

THE GAME MIGHT HAVE NOT GONE CITY’S WAY IF IT WASN’T FOR CURTIS DAVIES’ LAST DITCH TACKLE ON FERNANDO FORESTIERI IN THE BOX AT 0-0. CURTIS DAVIES HAD BEEN A LOYAL SERVANT TO THE CLUB WHEN HE LEFT IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 FOLLOWING RELEGATION, JOINING DERBY COUNTY FOR A DISMAL £500K, WHO ARE NOW LOOKING GOOD FOR PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE.

LB – ANDREW ROBERTSON.

THE BIGGEST SUCCESS STORY OF THIS TEAM, ANDY ROBERTSON, COULD HAVE GOT ON THE SCORESHEET AT WEMBLEY ONLY TO SKY A SITTER. THE SCOTTISH LEFT BACK HAD ONE MORE SEASON AT CITY UNTIL HE JOINED LIVERPOOL FOR £8MILLION. NOW AN ESTABLISHED FIRST TEAM PLAYER AT ANFIELD, ROBERTSON HAS HAD A BRILLIANT FIRST SEASON AT LIVERPOOL SO FAR.

RM – AHMED ELMOHAMADY.

HULL CITY’S RECORD APPEARANCE HOLDER IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE, ELMOHAMADY HAD A SOLID GAME AT WEMBLEY. THE NEXT SEASON WOULD NOT BE A SUCCESS FOR THE EGYPTIAN AND HE’D JUMP SHIP IN THE NEXT PRESEASON JOINING FORMER BOSS STEVE BRUCE AT ASTON VILLA WHERE HE IS ENJOYING A SOLID SEASON IN THE TOP 6 OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP. ELMOHAMADY WAS SUBJECT TO BOOS FROM THE CITY FANS WHEN THE TWO TEAMS PLAYED A 1-1 DRAW AT VILLA PARK IN AUGUST AT THE START OF THE SEASON.

CM – TOM HUDDLESTONE.

HIM AND JAKE LIVERMORE WHERE LIKE TWO ROLLS ROYCES IN MIDFIELD THAT AFTERNOON AND SHOWED GLIMPSES OF THEIR FIRST SEASON AT THE KCOM 5 YEARS AGO. HUDDLESTONE WAS A KEY PLAYER THE FOLLOWING SEASON, ESPECIALLY UNDER MARCO SILVA AS THE CLUB NEARLY ACHIEVED PREMIER LEAGUE SURVIVAL. LIKE MANY OTHERS ON THIS LIST, THE FORMER ENGLAND AND TOTTENHAM MIDFIELDER JOINED DERBY COUNTY LIKE CURTIS DAVIES AND IS ON COURSE FOR ANOTHER PROMOTION.

CM – JAKE LIVERMORE.

ALONGSIDE HUDDLESTONE IN THE MIDDLE, JAKE LIVERMORE ROUNDED OFF AN EMOTIONAL RETURN SEASON IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY IN CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROMOTION WINNING TEAM IN A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE. LIVERMORE SCORED ONCE MORE FOR THE CLUB IN A 3-3 DRAW AGAINST CRYSTAL PALACE THE FOLLOWING SEASON BEFORE JOINING WEST BROMWICH ALBION IN JANUARY 2017 WHERE HE HAS SINCE BEEN RECALLED BY THE NATIONAL AND BEEN A REGULAR ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL RECENTLY.

LM – ROBERT SNODGRASS.

THE SCOTSMAN WHO PROVIDED THE ASSISTS FOR MO DIAME’S STUNNING WINNER, ONLY SPENT HALF A SEASON MORE AT CITY BEFORE LEAVING FOR WEST HAM IN THE FOLLOWING JANUARY. SCORING SEVEN PREMIER LEAGUE GOALS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON, SNODGRASS WAS A KEY PLAYER UNTIL HIS DEPARTURE. HE WASN’T A SUCCESS AT WEST HAM AND WAS LOANED OUT TO ASTON VILLA LINKING UP WITH ELMOHAMADY AND STEVE BRUCE THIS SEASON AND HAS BEEN A BRILLIANT SIGNING FOR THEM.

CF – MO DIAME.

THE MATCH WINNER. AN ABSOLUTE THUNDERBOLT WORTHY OF WINNING ANY GAME OF FOOTBALL WAS SCORED BY THE SENEGALESE MIDFIELDER. THAT WAS HIS LAST GAME AND GOAL FOR CITY AS HE JOINED CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE NEWCASTLE UNITED IN THE SUMMER AFTER WHERE HE HAS HAD A FRUSTRATING TIME DESPITE GAINING PROMOTION. HE HAS SCORED ONE PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE THIS SEASON, AGAINST WEST HAM HIS FORMER CLUB.

ST – ABEL HERNANDEZ.

ONE OF THREE PLAYERS IN THE STARTING XI STILL AT THE CLUB, ABEL HERNANDEZ’ 22 LEAGUE GOALS THAT SEASON WAS THE MAIN REASON CITY GAINED PROMOTION. SINCE THEN HE HAS SCORED JUST 8 GOALS AND HAS BEEN FRUSTRATED BY INJURY. STARTING THIS SEASON WITH 3 GOALS IN 3 GAMES BEFORE INJURING HIS ACHILLES IN AUGUST AGAINST WOLVES AND HE HASN’T FEATURED SINCE, BUT HE HOPES TO FIRE CITY AWAY FROM LEAGUE ONE AND UP THE CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE AS HIS CONTRACT IS UP IN THE SUMMER.

SUBSTITUTES.

SAM CLUCAS – THE GINGER HAIRED MIDFIELDER WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT THAT IN HIS NEXT SEASON THAT HE WOULD BE VOTED THE CLUBS PLAYER OF THE SEASON AND WIN THE GOAL OF THE SEASON IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE, PERHAPS WHY HE JOINED SWANSEA FOR £16MILLION THE FOLLOWING SUMMER.

HARRY MAGUIRE – A FANS FAVOURITE THAT SEASON AND WAS SOON TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST CENTRE BACKS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE. SINCE COMING ON AS A SUBSTITUTE AT WEMBLEY, HE HAS CAPTAINED CITY IN THE TOP FLIGHT, BEEN CAPPED FOR ENGLAND, JOINED LEICESTER CITY AND BEEN LINKED WITH A £50MILLION MOVE TO PEP GUARDIOLA’S MANCHESTER CITY. NOT BAD, EH?

DAVID MEYLER – THE FOURTH PLAYER WHO PLAYED THAT IS STILL WITH THE CLUB AND CITY’S LONGEST SERVING PLAYER, DAVID MEYLER HASN’T HAD THE QUITE SAME SUCCESS AS THE OTHER SUBSTITUTES BUT HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT PLAYER FOR CITY SINCE THAT GAME AT WEMBLEY.
