This article will examine, how far England can go at this summer’s World Cup, by looking at the potential path of games they will take in the tournament.

If England top the group:

If England can beat Belgium to the top spot of group H, then that will give the Three Lions an easier run of games in the knockout rounds and mean they will likely progress further in the tournament. England will likely have to either beat all three teams they face or thrash Tunisia and Panama by more than Belgium do and then they can afford to draw against Belgium.

Last 16 Prediction: England 3-1 Poland.

I believe that Poland will be runners up in group H, therefore we will play them in the last 16 round. I feel as if we will have enough to get past Poland, but only if we are able to contain their star striker Robert Lewandowski. The England firepower should cause to many problems for the Polish defence and the Three Lions will march on into the quarter finals.

Quarter final Prediction: England 0-2 Brazil.

After progressing past Poland, we will then meet Brazil after they win group E and then beat Mexico in the last 16 round. I feel that the Brazilians will have to much for this young and fairly inexperienced England team and we will go out to one of the world’s best teams. I expect Brazil’s world class attackers such as Neymar, Coutinho and Jesus will have too much for an inexperienced, shaky England backline. Therefore, even if they win the group, I can only see the Three Lions going as far as the quarter final stage.

If England finish second:

If England beat Panama and Tunisia but end up losing to Belgium or drawing with Belgium but finishing with a lower goal difference, then this would arguably give England a tougher game in the last 16 match.

Last 16 Prediction: England 2-1 Columbia.

I believe that Columbia will finish top of group H, therefore we will face them in the last 16 round. I feel that England will have a tough game against a very good Columbia side, but as long as the Columbian star men such as Falcao and James Rodriguez are dealt with, England should have enough quality on paper, to go through to the next round.

Quarter final Prediction: England 1-3 Germany

I believe that Germany will win group F and then defeat Switzerland in the round of 16 stage, which would mean we face them in the last 16 round. Just like Brazil, the holders will have too much for England, through their tournament experience and their ability to perform on the big stage will be too much for England. Germany may not have the superstar names that grab your attention of the team sheet like Brazil do, but the way Joachim Lowe’s men work as a team and a cohesive unit is why they are the World Cup champions.

Analysis:

Therefore, in my opinion whether England finish first or second in the group, we will still be going out at the same stage to one of the big boys. If England go as far as I think they will then the FA and all England supporters will be happy at going as far as the quarter final stage, as that is all that is really expected from this group of players. The tournament will be regarded as successful either way but even better if England can beat Belgium to top spot.
