Many fans have said Gomes has been the best Goalkeeper at Watford since Tony Coton. I can only agree with them.
I wasn’t around when Coton was playing for us so Gomes is without doubt the greatest I have seen at WD18.
I’ve seen some good ones; Alec Chamberlain, Kevin Miller & Richard Lee to name a few, but they aren’t in the same category as HG.
Tottenham must be scratching their heads. (Did someone mention Capoue too?)
He has saved us games on numerous occasions. Three performances stick out for me; Bolton away 14/15, Chelsea at home 15/16, WBA away 15/16. Bolton we won 4-3 and probably would have lost without Gomes, Chelsea we certainly would have lost. But the last one was the most remarkable, we came out 1-0 winners. Ben Watson scored the winner that afternoon but there was only one hero. It is very rare to see a goalkeeper save two penalties in one game but not for Heurelho it’s not. He’s done it with Spurs & now with us. He deservedly won player of the season 15/16.
The reaction when he first signed on a free transfer was sceptical, understandably so as his time at Spurs which involved quite a few high profile howlers had caused his reputation to be one which was only negative. However since the Brazilian has become a fans favourite and made countless contributions to the club, not just with his efforts on the pitch. A Watford FC community ambassador and a really positive personality makes it difficult for the 35 year old not to be liked. Combine this with his passionate goal celebrations and his clear love for the club, it’s been a delight to see the man between the sticks flourish on the field. His reflexes are second to none and he has very rarely made errors, no more so than the most highly rated goalkeepers such as David De Gea…
He goes into my all-time Watford XI & I’m sure he goes into many other supporters’ too.
HEURELHO GOMES BABY.
Watford fans, how do you rate Gomes in terms of being one of Watford’s all time great goalkeepers? Let us know in the comments below!
