Jorge Luiz Frello Filho Cavaliere OMRI (born 20 December 1991), known as Jorginho, is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Chelsea and the Italy national team. He operates as a defensive midfielder or a deep-lying playmaker, also known as a regista in Italian football.
Jorginho is a ball-playing central midfielder who is best as the focal point of his team's possession, controlling the tempo of play from deep territory, linking midfield to attack, and offering constant lateral movements across midfield to move the opposition and receive short passes where possible.
Pirlo describes himself as a 'regista' – an Italian phrase which literally translates as 'director' in English. Speaking to The Athletic, Pirlo discussed the Euro 2020 final in which Italy beat England.
Positionally, Pirlo seems to play as a defensive midfielder, but he's far from a defensive midfielder in what he provides on the field.
#2 Jorginho (Chelsea)
After winning the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy in the summer, Jorginho has kicked on in the same vein. The deep-lying playmaker's early season form contributed greatly to Chelsea staying at the top of the Premier League table for a considerable amount of time this season.
Sergio Busquets has redefined the role of a Regista since his incorporation into FC Barcelona's first team in 2008. His ability to effortlessly string defence breaking passes with Xavi and Iniesta has been the X factor of Tiki-Taka football that has grown to be synonymous with the Catalan club.
He is definitely one of the best players in football today. Since Steven Gerrard and Michael Essien are a position closer to the opponent's goal and play as center midfielders, Pirlo is by far the best defensive midfielder.
What is a regista? The regista is a creative player who operates in front of the defence, almost always in a central position, and looks to get on the ball as often as possible. They are responsible for providing the link between defence and attack, and controlling the tempo of the game through their passing.
Carrilero is a term used to describe a variant of a wide central midfielder; playing on either side of a central center midfielder. The carrilero can be compared to a traditional box to box (B2B) midfielder, with less of a focus on attack. Instead, their role is to protect the wide areas of the midfield.
Pogba as a Regista
The regista will control everything from deep in midfield, dictate tempo and fire off inch-perfect passes to every corner of the pitch. He's the heartbeat of the side, and if he doesn't play well, the entire team will struggle.
A false nine is a centre-forward who repeatedly moves towards the ball in deeper positions from a high starting position, often dropping to receive centrally. The main intention is to get on the ball away from the opposition centre-backs – and, in doing so, to draw players out of position and disrupt the defence.
The Italian international is a highly technical midfielder capable of dictating the tempo of play in possession with quick passing and movement. He has most often been deployed as a deep-lying playmaker in midfield, using his ability to link defence and attack.
Jorginho is a defensive midfielder and he does his best work in possession-based systems, so his role is to win the ball back and recycle possession from deep.
The regista is only a defensive midfielder due to their deep positioning. His or her main priority is to distribute the ball, and link the defense to the midfield. As a playmaker, the regista must move constantly to keep an open lane with the ball.
The Mezzala is essentially a central/half-winger, who likes to do his defending slightly further up the field, although he generally have less defensive responsibility. The Mezzala is available with both Support and Attacking duties.
#1 Toni Kroos | Real Madrid
Real Madrid's midfield metronome Toni Kroos unsurprisingly tops the list, as he continues to set the standard for players in his position.
In any top 10 midfielders list, one name which always makes it is Barcelona legend, Xavi. The Spaniard is one of the most decorated players to ever play the game and has won almost every trophy and accolade the game has to offer.
However, he also clarified that while "Fernandinho is a fine long passer, [...] he is not an Alonso or an Andrea Pirlo type; he is not a regista.
Busquets is Barcelona. The finest deep-lying playmaker in the world.
He often acts as a “half-back” for the team: the defenders split apart and Busquets slots in temporarily as the third centre half to help circulate the ball and to assist the team in playing out from the back.
