Everton’s Marco Silva hopes to bring in Jamaal Lascelles to form defence of future

While uncertainty looms about Rafael Benitez’ future at Newcastle United, new Everton boss Marco Silva plans move for the Magpies’ captain, Jamaal Lascelles.

The Sun is reporting Silva is lining up a £30 million bid for the Newcastle United central defender. With Rafael Benitez’s contract negotiation stalled, Silva hopes to use the uncertainty to pry the 24 year old Englishman away to Goodison Park.

A product of Nottingham Forest’s academy, Lascelles has represented England at the youth levels. Though England manager Gareth Southgate has monitored the defender, he has not received a senior team call-up. Lascalles joined Newcastle in 2014 for a transfer fee of £4.5 million. At the start of the 2016 season, Benitez appointed Lascelles as Newcastle’s captain.

As he looks to improve the Blues’ eighth place finish, new manager Marco Silva believes Lascelles’ aerial ability could complement Michael Keane well. Silva reportedly hopes the two could become the center back pair of the future for the Toffees.

Luring Lascelles away from St. James Park will not be easy, though. At the close of the season, Benitez expressed his desire to keep Lascelles, saying, “I think he will stay here, and hopefully for the long-term.” He acknowledged Lascelles’ value as well, “It is not easy to find good centre-backs who can play well in the Premier League, especially not English ones, and it’s even harder to find young ones.”
