Derby County hit the ground running in a much eagerly anticipated promotion battling game at Pride Park against Aston Villa with a 2-0 win.
Derby came into the contest winning 8 in 11 games and made sure that record was extended to 9 in 12 games inside 24 minutes down to Weimann with a calm and composed finish against Sam Johnstone. They say there are no easy games in the Championship, and this wasn’t as straightforward with Villa enjoying 67 percent possession. Rowett’s side were clinical at the right times, Derby forced Steve Bruce’s men eleven to break down the 11 of men of Derby but they were too resiliant. Villa’s performance was one of predictable and with a lack of effort. A positive to take from the game is that Villa recalled Jack Grealish for the first time this season but struggled to compete with the opposition.
Late on in the game, Russell scored and put Villa to bed but there were times where it could of been more but I won’t spoil the victory.
Some Villa fans were frustrated about the lineup because there was no Davis in the team but Steve Bruce had full faith in a team in which had no recognised striker. Then for Villa to come out and play like they did had some fans are asking questions about the Villa management team.
With the win for the Derby side this consolidates a 4th position in the table, and next up for Derby are Millwall at home. Consequently, leaving the loss for Villa, leaving them in 5th position on goal difference ahead of the next match at home against Sheffield United
