After Lincoln’s already impressive run in the FA cup, they’ve added more magic to their run by going to Turf Moor and beating Burnley to reach the quarter finals. The man behind not only their cup run but also their 1st place in the Vanarama National league is Danny Cowley. Only last year he was a part-time manager and now he is appearing on Match of the Day.
His managerial story started at the Essex club,Concord Rangers FC. Danny started his managerial career there and year by year he added titles. By the final of his tenure he had won 3 promotions with the club, leaving the club in the Conference South. As if that was not enough he also added 3 cup trophies to their cabinet. His success in Essex was not unnoticed and another Essex based team (Braintree Town FC) signed him up. He was at Concord Rangers for a total of 8 years. Danny brought along his brother Nick (former Concord Rangers captain) to be part of the coaching staff at Braintree. He was only there for one season (2015-2016) and he managed to place the part-timers in the play-offs. They lost to Grismby in the end but comparing the sizes of the clubs in the league to Braintree it is easy to see that Cowley had left his mark in the history of the club. Whilst at Braintree he had been linked with their rival’s job Colchester. What made his run so impressive at Braintree was that he was also juggling a PE teaching job at a local school. For me that is so impressive considering the expectations of Braintree were simply to survive. He ended up giving Braintree fans the dream of possibly going to Wembley.
In May 2016 he had been confirmed as Lincoln’s new boss. This was a big step up for Danny, his first time managing not only a full-time professional club but also one outside Essex. The expectations were higher too, as Lincoln are a club full of football league tradition and want the return to the league as soon as possible. He bought along with him his trusted brother Nick to Lincoln. Fast forward to now and their success is incredible. They’ve guided a non-league team into the quarter finals(first time in 103 years) beating Ipswich and Burnley along the way. In the league they are in pole position to win it. They are 3 points ahead and have 2 games in hand on second place Dag and Red. It comes to no surprise that Lincoln have offered both Danny and Nick a contract extension till 2021 which both have accepted. In recent interviews the Lincoln staff have accredited the huge success they’re having not for any luck but instead to the Cowley’s work ethics. Apparently both are workaholics and their methods are clearly working. With the cup draw meaning they ever face one of England’s biggest club in Arsenal.
When you consider what Danny Cowley has achieved is remarkable considering he is only 37 years old. He is young for a manager and I am 99.9% he will end up managing in the Premier league. Everywhere he has been he has had not only success but pretty much instant success too. Easily the best non-league manager out there.
