Chelsea Preparing for Courtois Departure

Following a successful World Cup campaign with Belgium, Chelsea stopper, Thibaut Courtois has reportedly tried to get a move to Real Madrid. The Golden Glove winner’s agent has openly expressed interest in a transfer and now multiple reports suggest that he may be skipping trainings and meetings to force through his move. However, according to the Telegraph, Chelsea have a backup plan if he does depart and are willing to pay Jan Oblak’s £89 million release clause to make up for their loss.

Despite the arrivals of Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho, Chelsea have had a fairly lacklustre summer in terms of signings. Chelsea have reportedly had problems with the board this summer and now risk losing not only Thibaut Courtois but also talisman, Eden Hazard. The 26-year-old stopper is determined to get his move to Real Madrid and has missed multiple training sessions to make a statement of intent.

The Telegraph reports that Maurizio Sarri will not stand in his way if he does want to leave but losing him is only half of the problem. Despite signing Rob Green on a free transfer, Chelsea would just be left with the English veteran and error-prone Willy Caballero so will desperately search for a new first choice. With the Premier League’s transfer deadline much earlier than in previous years and much earlier than other foreign clubs, Chelsea might be willing to pay over the odds for goalkeepers if they run out of time.

Highly-rated Jan Oblak has emerged as one possible target as has Jack Butland among others. The Atletico Madrid keeper has a £89 million release clause in his contract and would be a sufficient replacement for Courtois if he does depart which can be expected within the next 48 hours. Atletico Madrid have no incentive to sell given that Chelsea would be strengthening their rivals by selling Courtois and therefore they would be forced to pay the full release clause.

However, there are other options namely Jack Butland or Sergio Rico. Both of these would be substantially cheaper but obviously not at the level of Courtois.
