Chelsea seem to have finally sealed a deal to appoint Maurizio Sarri as their new manager but could they be stealing midfielder Jorginho from the clutches of Manchester City. The Telegraph are reporting that Chelsea have agreed a deal for both manager and the midfielder all that remains is to finalise Antonio Conte’s contract termination.
Chelsea have been in talks with Napoli and Sarri since the end of last season but have been unable to strike a deal. But it now looks as if they have reached an agreement by paying £50 million plus a further £7 million in bonuses for both Sarri and Jorginho, who remains a target for Premier League champions Manchester City. City however, are refusing to give up on the midfielder who they reportedly agreed personal terms with two weeks ago.
Napoli originally wanted £8 million for Sarri but Chelsea were unwilling to pay that after former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti was appointed as the new manager of Italians. It looks now as if a compromise may have been reached which involves a joint fee the manager and Jorginho.
There have been reports in the in Italy and the italian media Cesc Fabregas would make the move from Chelsea to Napoli but reports here suggest that won’t be happening as he has no interest in moving to Italy.
The Napoli president De Laurentiis has confirmed that that Chelsea are close to the agreement saying “The Sarri deal is in the homestretch, it depends on him. I’ve laid down my conditions. It’s all in the hands of lawyers. Jorginho? We said to ourselves, if Jorginho has any requests we’ll take them into account.”
The Napoli president also apologised to Manchester City after he has agreed a deal with the Champions for the midfielder. “For that I’ll have to apologise to Manchester City. However, if the player would rather live in London than Manchester, I can understand that. If Chelsea are paying him even more then I can understand that too. Jorginho and Sarri together again? Jorginho would go to Chelsea regardless of Sarri.”
City are refuting the claims from De Laurentiis saying that the player would not rather live in London than Manchester.
Current Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte was the man who gave Jorginho his Italy debut in March 2016. But he was not involved in the decision to bring Jorginho to Stamford Bridge. The reports that Sarri was close to replacing him only came out after Conte had returned for Pre-season training at Chelsea’s Cobham training complex.
Chelsea need to agree deal with Conte to terminate the final year of his contract with is worth around £9 million but that is now moving ever closer with the breakthrough for Sarri. Should Chelsea pull of the deal for both Sarri and Jorginho then it would be seen as coup considering they have snatched the midfielder from Manchester City and they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
