The Scottish Premier League has been a one horse race since Rangers entered administration and had to play in the Scottish Third Division in the 2012-13 season. They have won every title since extremely comfortably including this current seasons already with a 5-0 win away at Hearts. Winning 28 out of a possible 30 games this season, it is safe to say they are far to good for the Scottish League but where would they finish in a much tougher Premier League?
The Champions League
The top side in the Scottish league being given a spot in Champions League play off round spot meaning Celtic have had the opportunity to qualify in recent years. For the last two seasons they have failed to qualify going out to Malmo and Maribor, meaning they participate in the Europa League group stages. However they did qualify this season and despite finishing bottom of the group, they did pick up two impressive draws against one of the best clubs in England, Manchester City.
A large amount of Celtic’s team feature in the Scottish national football team. 6 of the starting eleven in their most recent game against Slovenia being Celtic players. Having failed to qualify for Euro 2016 or even qualified for the play offs, it was a disappointing campaign for them. And with just the top one team automatically qualifying for Russia 2018 World Cup, that already looks extremely unlikely as they sit 4th, six points behind leaders England. They also lost 3-0 to England during the current qualifying campaign, a team that contains mostly players in the higher Premier League clubs.
I don’t think they’d be in the top 6 because of their lack of success in Europe. They have not got past the group stage since the 2012-13 season and normally 2 or 3 out of the 4 teams always do every season. However I feel they would stay up with relative ease due to results like their two draws against Man City and would finish roughly 14th.
