Southend United faced Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night and what a night for the Southend fans. The shrimpers had lost 8 competitive matches in a row leading into this and Sheffield United being favourites to go up, many were expecting it to be 9. A lot of fans were also calling for Southend’s manager Phil Brown to be sacked as that many losses in a row is unacceptable for a League One team.
Within 5 minutes we were 1-0 up thanks to an own goal and not long after that it was 2. I blinked and it was 3-0. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, nor could the other Southend fans. It was still in the first 30 minutes so there was still that doubt that we would get complacent and allow them back into the match. But we were faultless. The only negative from this match is that Nile Ranger faces up to 6 weeks on the sideline picking up an ankle injury. A sense of relief filled the away end at Bramall Lane after the final whistle went and the players came over to thank the travelling fans. You could see how much it meant to the players and one in particular Adam Barrett, Mr. Southend himself.. The most passionate player to wear our navy shirt.
Now I really hope this kick starts our season, as we have a great group of players with real talent. I feel we need one more centre back and maybe another midfielder to have enough squad depth to survive this league but a win like this is what counts in the lower leagues, it gives the players confidence and they can play with the fans on their side instead of shouting abuse (which Roots hall is known for).
Southend face Bristol Rovers on Saturday and this will be a real test for us, as last season we always played up to the big teams but the struggle was against the lower end of the table teams and I’m not sure why.
Let’s get behind the Blues and make Roots Hall rock!
Up the Blues!
