Cristiano Ronaldo has arguably the biggest love/hate personality in football. However, whether you believe Cristiano is the best player in the world or not, his talent is undeniable. 2017 saw Cristiano Ronaldo win his 5th Ballon d’Or, equalling Lionel Messi’s tally, but controversy began to circle on social media on whether Ronaldo was more worthy than the Argentinian forward.

Debates arose on whether winning the UEFA Champions League should be an influential factor on who wins the award for best player in the world. Should the Ballon d’Or be solely based on individual performance?

As a team, in the 2016/17 season, Real Madrid had one of their greatest campaigns in history, in which Ronaldo played a huge role. Collectively, the team won La Liga, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Champions League, making them the best team in the world. Whereas Barcelona won the Copa del Rey for the third consecutive season and the Supercopa de España. Evidently, Real Madrid had a more successful season, but how much should this team performance influence the Ballon d’Or?

As an individual, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 goals for Real in all competitions, with 25 of them being in La Liga and 12 being Champions League goals. Whereas Messi scored 54 goals in all competitions for Barca, with 37 of these being in La Liga and 11 in Champions League games. The Barcelona player also beats Ronaldo where assists, chances created, successful dribbles and Man of the Match awards are concerned.

Despite all of this, the Ronaldo v Messi debate will continue for as long as football lives, with a final decision never reached. These two footballers have dominated simultaneously for the past 10 years, easily shaking off the high level of talent we have been blessed with in this era of football.

Messi’s former team mate, Neymar, confirmed himself as one of the best players in the world after been ranked third after Ronaldo and Messi. Although his rise to the number one spot may seem inevitable, it appears that the top two may be hard to budge, looking as superior as ever.

The tally now stands at 5-5. What an outstanding era!
