It still hasn't sunk in that Aston Villa are back in the Premier League. I must admit that I will miss the championship, that is the best league in my opinion but Aston Villa deserve to be in the premier league.
We have been knocking on the premier league's door ever since we got relegated. It has been a very long journey plenty of ups and downs, I think more ups than downs since we have been relegated though. Firstly thank you to Steve Bruce for shoring us up, it's a shame it didn't really work out for him after last season's playoffs especially getting us to the playoff final and sadly lost to Fulham but in the end that made us come back stronger so in a way I'm glad that we lost to Fulham.
After going on a losing streak (maybe with a few draws in there) I like most other villa fans thought yeah that's it we aren't making the playoffs and then Dean Smith's men went on an amazing unbeaten run and sneaked into the playoffs and secured our playoff place with a game or 2 to spare and got West Bromwich in the playoffs.
A local derby in a way so the atmosphere was proper building leading up to the two matches and on the match-day, what an amazing atmosphere it was, it was electric. Villa scraped through the first match by winning 2-1 with Dwight Gayle getting sent off and then losing 2-0 in the second leg but winning it on penalties with Jed Steer being a hero (if I remember rightly) in that penalty shootout. Wembley here we come.
So May bank holiday dawned on us and the nerves were building in my household and I expect they were in every villa household and the villa fans that went to Wembley on that bank holiday monday. I was expecting it to be a close match after the way Derby came back and beat Leeds but during most of the match villa dominated the Rams but then Derby came to life in like the 75th minute and got a goal to set my nerves and I expect every other villa fans nerves off. I remember not having any nails left when the final whistle went but I'm glad the ref blew when he did and it finished 2-1 villa.
It still hasn't sunk in and I don't think it will until Villa kick off their Premier League campaign until villa play spurs at Tottenham's new ground. Let's hope for a decent season for the villa.
