Arsenal End of Season Review

As the 2020-21 Premier League season comes to an end for Arsenal, I wish to give my full review of this roller coaster of a year we’ve had. It is no secret that compared to last, this season was a dreadful one for Arsenal. However, it hasn’t been all bad. We’ve made some good signings in Gabriel and Odegaard and have managed to get performances in with our youngsters. In this review, I will rate the entire Arsenal squad out of 10 and give my thoughts on their performances. I will also define the season as whole after the matter. Just to clarify, I will not be including players we have sold or loaned out during the season. So, here are my Arsenal player ratings for the 2020-21 season.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Goalkeepers -:

Bernd Leno – 9/10 – He has been our number one all season. My priority reason on why we didn’t get relegated or finish in the bottom half of the table.

Alex Runarsson – 5/10 – I have no hatred or negative thoughts on him. He was our goalkeeper in most of our group stage matches and we went on to be undefeated in said group stage. Work still needs to be done though. I believe a loan spell would help him improve.

Matt Ryan – 7/10 – He has helped a lot. He’s also a boyhood Arsenal fan. A bit of a let down in our loss at Villa Park, but otherwise not so bad. Would definitely try to make his loan spell permanent.

Defenders -:

Hector Bellerin – 5/10 – I think very highly of Bellerin, but I’m afraid he has come crashing down since his injury. I don’t put all the blame for this bad season on him, but I feel we need a better right back going into next season. I do thank him for what he has done since he’s been here, but I’m afraid it’s time to say goodbye.

Kieran Tierney – 10/10 – My player of the season. Whenever he is in the team, I see strength and fight. I just hope he doesn’t get injured again. If he does, I hope it’s only minor.

Gabriel – 9/10 – A decent debut season for him. I still want a better partner for him, but overall I believe he’s been our best defender this season.

Rob Holding – 6/10 – I’m not a fan of Rob Holding. I don’t think he’s bad, but I don’t think he’s good enough either. Some good performances, but I would like to see someone stronger than him next to Gabriel.

Cedric – 8/10 – I would have him in my squad any time. I prefer him to Bellerin in every way. I just wished he featured more this season.

Calum Chambers – 6/10 – Came back from a long injury, so not much game time for him. However, I have been impressed with him since his return.

Pablo Mari- 8.5/10 – I want to see more of him. I believe Arteta should play them together in training so they can build a partnership like Mari has with Holding. Him and Holding are good, but I want a strong defensive partnership not a decent one.

David Luiz – 9/10 – His final season for the club. I’ve loved every minute watching him. I had hoped for him to play his final game against Palace or Brighton, but it doesn’t look that way. Him and Gabriel is a pairing I will not forget.

Midfielders -:

Bukayo Saka – 7/10 – No pun intended. He’s a great player but I feel some more work needs to be done. He’s still young after all. I have faith in him, but I want improvements.

Dani Ceballos – 4/10 – I rated Ceballos very highly on his first loan spell, but second season syndrome hit him like a tonne of bricks. I believe he was our main issue in not getting into the Europa League final. I am a bit glad he’s going back to Spain in all honesty.

Martin Odegaard – 10/10 – Amazing player. I’ve not seen one bad performance from him. I pray we sign him permanently.

Thomas Partey – 10/10 – This is who I want in my teams midfield every single game. He’s a beast. I just hope we find the right partner for him.

Mohammed Elneny – 6/10 – I’ve been pleased with him. He’s not perfect, but I’ve enjoyed watching him in certain games. Especially that goal against Newcastle. Woah.

Granit Xhaka – 8/10 – Everyone knows I’m a massive critic of Xhaka’s, however he has had a good season. Still hope to find a replacement, don’t get me wrong, but they’re were improvements.

Fowards -:

Alexandre Lacazette – 10/10 – Top scorer this season. Hope we keep him. He’s a pivotal member to this team.

Willian – 7/10 – I had hoped to see more of the Willian from Chelsea, but it didn’t happen. I think highly of him, but this wasn’t his best season by a mile. Just above average, for me.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7.5/10 – I don’t know what happened, but this was not the Auba I’m used to this season. I expected more of him, in all honesty. I still love the guy, but he needs to step up. Still some good performances. I should also keep in mind he missed a few games due to malaria. But still, I want the goal scoring machine back.

Nicolas Pepe – 8.5/10 – Slow start to the season, but he has picked up. I have loads of faith in Pepe and I hope to see him play more and score more next season.

Reiss Nelson – 3/10 – I have not seen him at all this season. Only in one or two games. So I can’t really give him a high marking.

Eddie Nketiah – 6.5/10 – Seriously underrated player. Whenever I watch him play, I see a young Ian Wright. I want him as the back up striker if Lacazette were to leave in summer.

Gabriel Martinelli – 7.5/10 – He’s our best youngster for me. He never let’s me down. I just wish he featured more if it weren’t for the knee injury he had at the start.

Folarin Balogun – 8/10 – I’m happy we managed to keep him. He’s a great player. I hope Arteta plays him more next season.

Now, you may be wondering what I rate Arteta this season. As many are aware, I don’t trust the process. I’m Arteta Out. I feel we need a new manager. I hope Allegri or someone is sworn in at some point that next season. But I also want Daniel Ek to buy the Kroenkes out by summer. They have caused so many problems this season. Especially trying to get us into the Super League. I was at the protest before the Everton match and I have never seen a fan base so united against one family.

Overall, bearing in mind that we are in 10th place and that we still have two games left at the time of me typing this article, this season has been my worst as an Arsenal fan. Period.

We need improvements. We need new owners. And especially, in my opinion, we need a new manager. I just hope we get some business done in the summer.
