Chelsea have sacked Antonio Conte after two years in charge at Stamford Bridge. This news does not come as a surprise with speculation surrounding his future for some months.
Conte returned for pre-seaosn training last week but according to Sky in Italy Conte is no longer the Head Coach at Chelsea and Maurizio Sarri is expected to replace him.
Conte led the Blues to the Premier League title in a stunning first season in charge at the Bridge but his second season was filled with negativity and continued speculation around his future. He managed to lead the side to the FA Cup beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty. However, their Premier League campaign ended in disappointment finishing 5th in the table and failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis said on Wednesday that “Conte was close to becoming Chelsea’s new manager. My lawyers are in talks with his to finalise everything.”
There has been very little transfer activity at Chelsea so far this summer with the managerial situation unclear but it now looks as if there is a resolution and that Sarri will take the reigns from Conte. The Blues have been liked with a double swoop for Sarri and Jorginho from Napoli.
Chelsea themselves have so far refused to comment and are not saying if Conte has been relieved of his duties or not. However, it is expected that a statement from the club will be released at some point in the next 24-48 hours.
