So it is official, former PSG manager Unai Emery has replaced Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager; giving his first press conference on Wednesday. Many Gunners fans and pundits feel that this is an underwhelming appointment, but nevertheless the decision cannot be changed now. If Emry is too improve Arsenal and get them out of the stale rut they were in under Wenger he knows he needs a serious overhaul of his squad. The defence has been an issue for Arsenal for a good ten years, so here we asses five centre-backs Emry should look to sign to improve the Arsenal team.
Italian defender Bonucci could be tempted to a summer move after a poor first season at AC Milan. Bonucci struggled at the San Siro after his move from Juventus; with fans heavily critical of him as Milan finished 6th. Despite this he showed in his time at Juve what a good defender he is; as he helped win seven Serie A trophies. If Arsenal can agree a deal with Milan the 31 year old could be the leader they have missed out on in recent years.
This one looks set to happen, with some reports stating that Arsenal have already enquired for the Borrussia Dortmund defender. The Greek centre back, referred to by his first name Sokratis due to his mouthful of a last name, has been at Dortmund for since 2013 and has impressed making over 100 appearance for the club. Like Bonucci age might not be on his side at 29; but he would be a fine addition for the Gunners.
German defender Jonathan Tah has always been touted as a good player. Having made his debut at 17, the Bayer Leverkusen defender has been called the next Jerome Boateng, due to his pace and power. Despite only being 22 he has played over 100 games already in his career; and if Emry wants a defender he can rely on in the long-term none are better than Tah.
Despite being part of a relegated West Bromwich Albion side Jonny Evans is still a class act. Last summer Manchester City showed an interest in him and Arsenal even did themselves in January; but both clubs were put off by Albion’s £30 million asking price. However, Evans has a relegation clause in his contract meaning that he is now available for just £3 million. A calming presence who knows what it takes to win titles, having won three at Manchester United, he could prove a shrewd piece of business for Arsenal.
Now this one is a long shot. Luiz has been frozen out at Chelsea and was sold to the London club from PSG by Emry in 2016. However, with Luiz seemingly having no future at Chelsea, leading to him being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad, it would be worth Arsenal at least taking a look at him. While he can be erratic at times there was no doubting that he was one of Chelsea’s best players in their 2017 league title win and he could benefit the Gunners backline.
