In just under three weeks time, Yeovil Town’s first game of the season kicks off against Notts County at Huish Park and in this article I look at 3 people who could change our season.
1. Francois Zoko
Signed last year on a short term contract, Francois would prove to be a revelation. After a slow start due to having no pre-season, he fired the Glovers to safety under Darren Way’s revolution and after agreeing a one year deal at the end of the season his goal scoring touch and experience will be key in our push for a more comfortable finish this time around, perhaps even more. Scoring goals was a huge problem for us last season but hopefully a fully fit Zoko could change our fortunes in front of goal.
2. Darren Ward
He joined a Glovers defence last November, which were shipping goals at an alarming rate, that was of course until he became part of that defence and a much more solid one at that. After Sturrock was sacked Darren Way appointed the experienced Ward as the new club captain which worked wonders. He was a true leader at the back and helped the likes of Jakub Sokolik and Nathan Smith really progress. Despite being injured at the end of the season, Wards influence had obviously paid off with us keeping a staggering amount of clean sheets and he will be hoping to carry on that form into next season. You know what they say, Strikers win you games but Defences win you leagues.
3. Darren Way
The young manager and club legend did a remarkable job in the second half of the season ensuing Yeovil’s rut of relegation’s would come to an end. The club showed huge ambition by handing Darren a 3 year contract at the end of last season and he’ll hope to pay that back on the pitch this coming season. Darren’s relentless and passionate style is unrivalled and this is what has got the players playing not just for him but the badge that they wear upon their shirt and to us fans that’s the most important things after results! He also has a system he believes in with 4-3-3 giving us an incredible amount of balance in both defence and attack with a midfield anchor really providing immense support for the back four.
For us to be successful this season it’s going to hinge down to a lot more than these three men but I believe if they all do their jobs to an excellent standard then it’ll certainly give us an incredible chance of pushing on as a club.
