After an extremely disappointing campaign last season which resulted in relegation, Rovers will be looking to push on under Darren Ferguson and look to bounce back to League One at the first attempt. In this article I will be looking at 3 current Doncaster players who could make this season a memorable one for the Rovers.
Despite our disappointing relegation to League 2, Tommy Rowe was one of the very few bright sparks during the second half of the season. After initially joining on loan from Wolves, Rowe had a major impact on the side during the latter stages of the season, contributing 3 goals in 10 appearances and at times looked unplayable. Rowe then made the move permanent on the 18th of May, and became Ferguson’s first signing of the summer. This in itself shows his commitment to the cause, despite the drop in division. His clever play allows him to be able to take possession, deliver killer balls in and even chip in with the odd goal or two, which will be vital in our efforts to hopefully regain our League One status. He is certainly one of the better talents in the division, and we all hope he can have a good individual season in what will be a gruelling campaign.
All Rovers fans will be expecting big things from Andy Williams this season after a slightly disappointing last campaign in front of goal, even though he managed 16 goals in what was his first season with the Rovers. Last season was a struggle at times for the former Swindon man, as he often looked isolated and didn’t receive the support his play so often deserved, in what was one of, if not the poorest Rovers side I can recall watching. Despite this, we cant forget that Williams scored 11 goals in 13 games starting at the end of October and lasting well into January. Either side of this excellent purple patch though, were two very dry spells which was one of the main reasons why we now find ourselves in League 2. The major contributing factor behind forwards finding the back of the net is so often the support they receive from the players behind them, and in new signings Tommy Rowe and Gary McSheffrey I feel we have found the the perfect combination to hopefully get Williams firing again and I firmly believe if we do manage to keep hold of Andy he could go above and beyond a 20+ goal season next campaign and fire Rovers back into the League One.

With nearly 450 career appearances to his name, Doncaster born Butler will be a key component in the heart of the Rovers defence in the upcoming season. Butler’s experience and individual performances will play a pivotal part throughout the campaign. With the new arrivals of highly rated Mathieu Baudry from Leyton Orient and Joe Wright who was recently released by Huddersfield, Butler who will be aiming to forget about the disappointment of last season and will hope to develop a solid pairing with either of of the two and lay the foundations for a successful season in League 2.
Doncaster fans, do you agree that these 3 players will be pivotal? Let us know in the comments below!
