Leicester City sacked Claude Puel this Sunday, following a 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at home the previous day.
Former Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers has been appointed the Premier League side’s new manager.
He was manager at Celtic Park since May 2016, and has since won the Scottish Premiership in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 season.
Alongside this, Rodgers has also won the Scottish Cup in both seasons and Scottish League Cup in both seasons.
This season has seen the club crowned the League Cup winners for a third year in a row, as well as currently sitting top of the league by eight points.
The Bhoys are also set to play in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup next Saturday.
An impressive record whilst at the helm of one of Scotland’s best clubs – a record that can only be helped by the quality of some of his players.
As a result, I look at three players Rodgers could look to sign for Leicester in the summer transfer window.
Kristoffer Ajer | 20 | Centre-Back |
Kristoffer Ajer was signed by Celtic a few months prior to Rodgers’ appointment.
Since his arrival, Ajer has been a significant player for Rodgers – making 66 appearances in all competitions to date.
The Norwegian has had some tough competition for the centre-back position at Celtic Park, but that hasn’t stopped him getting game-time under the Northern Irish manager.
Since 2016, the young defender has made six appearances for Norway’s senior since, along with several youth caps for their U19s and U21s too.
At only 20, Ajer has plenty of years left to make a name for himself. If he were to follow Rodgers to Leicester – a club with already good centre-backs, he would learn from them as well as compete for a first-team opportunity.
Oliver Ntcham | 23 | Centre-Midfielder |
Oliver Ntcham was signed by Rodgers in the summer of 2017 from Manchester City.
The Frenchman is again another significant player since his arrival – making 78 appearances in all competitions and grabbing himself 15 goals.
Alongside this, he has made 15 appearances for France’s U21s, scoring once.
Leicester’s midfield is something that has downgraded following the departures of N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea, and Riyad Mahrez’s departure to Manchester City.
Next season, with Premier League winner Marc Albrighton still present, Rodgers could build a new midfield with Ntcham being a key part of it. Whether it’s a five-man or four-man, the 23-year-old is a solid rotational option to have.
Odsonne Édouard | 21 | Striker |
Signed by Rodgers initially on loan last season, Odsonne Édouard has been a vital player for the Northern Irish manager.
The 21-year-old made 29 appearances in all competitions for Celtic during the 2017-18 season, scoring 11 goals – As a result of this impressive season, the club signed the striker on a permanent deal in June 2018.
This season so far has seen Édouard make 37 appearances in all competitions. He has scored 14 goals – a tally I’m sure will break 20 by the end of the season.
Leicester have some good strikers at their disposal, however, since signing Kelechi Iheanacho in 2017, the Nigerian has scored only four goals. Ever-present Jamie Vardy, 32, is the go to guy for goals – Something the Foxes can’t rely on forever. Their third option up-top is fellow 32-year-old, Shinji Okazaki. He has only scored 14 goals since joining in 2015.
If the Foxes want to climb the Premier League table, a reshuffle in their goal’s department is definitely something to look at.
Édouard brings goals, lightening pace – similar to Vardy, reasonable composure and youth – all attributes that could help the club massively.
So, they were three Celtic players that Brendan Rodgers could look to sign this summer.
