After a poor campaign last season, Charlton will be looking to push on under their new gaffer Russell Slade. In this article I will be looking at 3 current Charlton players who could make this season a memorable one for the Addicks.

No Charlton fan would of thought Nick Pope would be the number one at the valley this time last year, but a lot can change in a year, and Nick Pope is living proof of that. Many Charlton fans wouldn’t have cared if Nick Pope left last season but after a brilliant finish to the campaign and some phenomenal saves, including a fantastic double save against Derby he has won many fans over including myself, as well as winning fans over he has also caught the attention of some big clubs such as the Scottish champions Celtic so it will be a challenge to keep hold of him this summer. Nick Pope kept Charlton in many games last season and I believe Charlton need a rebuild to achieve success next season, it’s to be said that you should always build from the back and every fan in SE7 will agree that the 6 ft 3 shot stopper Pope needs to be in-between the sticks come August to be able to push for a successful campaign and bounce back to the Championship.
With Johann Berg Gudmundsson set to leave the club, Charlton had to look for a new winger who can chip in with some goals and replace the Icelandic international Gudmundsson , and that man is Ricky Holmes, the first signing under Russell Slade’s legacy is one Charlton fans are very happy with. We can all understand why, after a very impressive campaign with Northampton last season finishing on 11 goals from the right side of midfield, Holmes was a wanted man. After Charlton announced the capture of Holmes, Charlton fans were ecstatic as we haven’t had a player of his quality in a while and I think he will suit the side perfectly on and off the pitch, we have been looking for a midfielder who can get involved and score a few goals for years. At last it looks as if we have one, as well as that Ricky has a winning mentality after winning League 2 with Northampton last season. Those are the players you want in your squad ahead of the 16/17 campaign, Holmes will excite the fans and run at the opposition which will mean he is definitely a player who could light up Charlton’s season.

It’s strange to think Ade Lookman was playing Sunday league football for Waterloo FC just over 18 months ago. From playing on the muddy uneven Sunday League pitch to playing on the Valley turf is a massive achievement. Ade has definitely stepped up and become a fan favourite around SE7. He made a huge impact after coming through the youth squad, he bagged himself 5 goals towards the back end of the 15/16 campaign including a brilliant finish against top 6 side Brighton. Lookman’s versatility allows him to operate both on the wing and upfront which has attracted many top English clubs such as Liverpool and Spurs. Good news is at the moment it looks as if the 18 year old Charlton striker looks set to stay in South London as he looks for first team football and I believe if we do manage to keep hold of Ade he could go above and beyond a 15+ goal season next campaign and fire Charlton back into the Championship.
Will these 3 players be pivotal to the club next season? Let us know in the comment below!
