Slovenia v England Preview

Written by Ese Agboaye

Following their 2-0 win over Malta last time out, England play Slovenia in what’ll be their second away match in three.
The last time England played Slovenia away was at the qualifying stage of Euro 2016 where three second half goals from Jack Wilshere and Wayne Rooney saw their side beat Slovenia despite being a goal down at the break.
There are a couple of changes going into this match with Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford and Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs coming in to replace Tom Heaton and Ryan Bertrand respectively. They’re bot out with injury.
Slovenia will be looking for their first win over England at the fifth attempt having lost to the Three Lions over their last four matches, the first being a friendly in September 2009.Eric Dier also returns into the fold.

With the news of Wayne Rooney being dropped to the bench, who should start in his place, assuming he would play a striking role? Could Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge fill in as a strike partnership? Do you agree with the decision to drop him? Its been suggested that he could play as an impact sub. One side of me agrees as in my head, I have England drawing one all with 20-30 minutes of the game to go, and he’s the one who changes the game with a goal, or an important pass which leads to a goal. Another side of me disagrees as I don’t think he’s cut out to play that role. What do you think?

Jordan Henderson was the obvious candidate to take over the role as captain, whilst Rooney acknowledges that Southgate has chosen to do so. Rooney has implied that Henderson will no doubt do a great job, and that it’ll be a proud moment for him and his family.

They are currently two points behind England, having beaten Slovakia at the weekend. Its pretty tight at the top with it all to play for. Can England extend their lead at the top? Or Will Slovenia claw back?
