Newcastle United crowned EFL Champions

Yesterday saw Newcastle United pip Brighton to the Championship title in what was a dramatic twist on the final day of the EFL championship season.Brighton who have been superb throughout the season required victory or Newcastle to lose to lift the Championship crown.

Brighton traveled to Aston Villa while Newcastle entertained Barnsley at a packed St James Park.Newcastle hit the ground running dominating large parts of the game and in particular right back Deandre Yedlin who was causing all kinds of problems for Barnsley down the right hand side which eventually led to Ayoze Perez scoring with a deft touch to put the Magpies 1-0 in this game. Many of the Newcastle fans were checking the mobile phones throughout following the Brighton game and the nerves were evident at times.

Brighton took the lead in their respective fixture against Aston Villa who also had a man sent off in that game,so advantage Brighton in the race for the title, but Newcastle kept plugging away and eventually grabbed their second of the game from the impressive Chancel Mbemba who rifled home to send the Geordie crowd in raptures.

All the pressure was on Brighton to get the result required to claim the title and under Chris Hughtons stewardship they would be focused on the task at hand.Newcastle then scored a 3rd goal to kill off any hopes of a Barnsley come back and all attention turned to Brighton’s game at Villa Park. The Geordie public then got word that 2 minutes stoppage time had been added on at Villa Park, everyone inside St James Park were eagerly awaiting the final result to come in including at one point one young Toon fan actually recorded Newcastle keeper Rob Elliott asking fans behind his goal of any news in the Villa game,so as the full-time whistle went at St James Park we all waited for the news we were so desperately wanting to hear and that Brighton’s game ended in a draw and which would crown Newcastle United as champions.

The crowd exploded into voice once the result was confirmed and many supporters broke down in tears at their beloved Newcastle United going up as champions and the playing staff exploded into celebration for what has been a very tough season in the championship.Credit to Brighton who have been exceptional this season and a manager in which the Geordie public hold in high regards deservedly go up with Newcastle and no one would begrudge them claiming the league title.

While the Newcastle fans were in strong voice their was only one name they were chanting and that was for the manager Rafa Benitez who despite everything stuck by the club and got them back in to the Premier League and who they have adopted as one of their own and deservedly so,this will do the managers increasingly growing reputation as one of Europe’s best managers no harm at all.

Newcastle supporters want Mike Ashley the owner to give Rafa anything he wants in terms of a summer transfer budget and as the owner was in attendance yesterday he must have witnessed the phenomenal atmosphere inside the ground and has to surely agree to give the manager a substantial transfer kitty and keep him at the club long-term.

Fans stayed behind to see Newcastle lift the trophy and the traditional end of season lap off honor which gave the players the opportunity to thank the supporters for their support throughout the season.I have to say Brighton have been a credit to the division not just for this season but have a number of season’s except this season they got their dream and were rightly so celebrating promotion to the Premier League.

Congratulations to Newcastle United and Brighton on memorable seasons and also to the other Championship teams for making it an interesting season and a challenging one.
